 10.4  Underpopulation  in  Australia

Until  I  read  the  textbook  I  was  not  aware  that  the  USA  and  Australia  are  fairly  similar  in  size,  but  look
at  the  difference  in  the  size  of  their  populations  –  USA,  over  300  million  and  Australia  -‐  only  20
million  people.  The  resources  that  exist  in  Australia  are  not  being  fully  developed  so  Australia  is
underpopulated.

The  Australian  government  has  used  various  incentives  over  the  years  to  encourage  people  to  come
to  Australia  or  for  people  to  move  internally  to  more  sparsely  populated  area.

Now  answer  the  following  questions  using  the  text  and  diagrams,  by  inserting  your  answers  where
appropriate  –

Ø Identify  three  methods  which  could  be  used  to  solve  the  underpopulation  in  Australia.  …

Ø Identify  three  problems  which  may  be  caused  if  more  people  are  encouraged  to  move  to
Australia.  …

Ø Explain  why  some  people  think  that  Australia  is  not  underpopulated.  …

CIE  Assignment  10.4  Too  may  or  too  few

Ø Now  look  at  the  Sample  question  available  on  the  CD  Rom  for  Topic  2,  so  that  you
see  it  as  it  would  be  in  an  exam  question.

Ø Then  download  the  Assignment  I  have  typed  out  for  you  and  fill  in  your  answers.

When  you  have  finished,  save  your  answer  and  return  it  for  marking.
