Assignment 4
Australian immigration: blessing or burden?
Ladies and gentlemen, thank you all for attending my speech today.
My name is Oliver Smith, and I am an Australian exchange student, and I am attending the Department of
Anthropology at the University of Manchester just like the rest of you. I was asked kindly by our headmaster
if I would like to hold a speech for all of you today about “Australian immigration: blessing or burden?”
Quickly before we start, I would like all of you to participate in a quick poll. Would those of you who think
immigration to Australia is a blessing raise your hand? Alright, appreciate it. Seems most of you think it’s a
good thing.
Quickly allow me to give a brief outline of the number of immigrants in Australia, afterwards, I will move on
to a detailed analysis of how the immigrants and asylum seekers affect Australia. In the end, I will try to
discuss whether immigrants are a blessing or a burden and sum up most of what I’ve talked about today. If
you have any questions, feel free to ask after I’ve summed up.
Many of you here today might very well be immigrants as well, so maybe your parents or your grandparents
went through something similar. Australia as some of you might know is populated by almost 50%
immigrants. According to Professor Castles at the University of Sydney Australia is one of the most diverse
societies in the world with 28% of the population born overseas if you include children, it’s 45% 1. Around
600.000 migrants came to Australia in the 1850s due to the gold rush they came from both Britain, Ireland,
China, and many European countries2. In my opinion, this isn’t a bad thing since many came and helped
build what you see today. They made Australia thrive and what it is today or at least helped with it, of
course, the native Australians played a big role as well. However, our Australian government tried to stop the
migration from non-European countries by implementing the white Australia policy. But they would love all
the British, Irish, and Dutch people to come since that would benefit them economically. Which was smart
for the government to build a stable economy. It didn’t take long after World Wars 1 and 2, 100’s thousands
of people migrated from European countries whereafter the white Australian policy crumbled, and Australia
could become the multicultural country that we all live in today, whether this is a good or a bad thing

depends on you guys’ beliefs. If you ask me, I think this was a very good thing to happen to Australia I
wouldn’t be able to imagine how it would be to live here without all the different cultures. Just imagine all
the delicious foods you would’ve never tasted if it wasn’t for the immigrants. In Australia, we have this thing
called an immigration point-based system. It’s how the government judge people trying to migrate to
Australia, age is a key factor where 25-32 years old is the most ideal, university degree, work experience and
proficiency in English are also some very big green flags for the government. 3 This allows Australia to pick
and choose who comes from different skill sectors. This way they are certain that all the immigrants can help
the community. I was startled at first when I found out, that asylum seekers are being detained in offshore
camps “a policy that has been panned by human rights groups” 4 John donnison, BBC News. There are
multiple incidents of this scope. A woman named Elahe Zivardar, also known as Ellie Shakiba, has been
through this. She came to Australia by boat with 20.000 other asylum seekers in 2013, unfortunately for
5.000 of them including her, they arrived after the announcement from the Australian government on July
19, 2013, that “no refugee arriving by boat would be settled in Australia.” 5 As you can hear it wasn’t all
unicorns and rainbows. Sure, it was great for the economy when the government said they wanted people
into Australia but not so much when they decided against it. Back to Elahe or Ellie, 2.500 asylum seekers
were taken from the 5.000 and got exiled, the women, unaccompanied minors and families were sent to
Nauru and the men who were travelling alone got sent to Papua New Guinea. Here they were sent to prisons.
Everyone was of course wondering, why did this happen to ME? They probably just picked at random. But
we will probably never know because no government would openly admit that they have done something so
horrible. But what some people see as horrible others see as a genius idea. “Right-wing conservatives in
Europe and the UK have looked to Australia as a model, and President Trump praised Australia’s policies as
a great success and as an example of effective border protection policies.” 6 Shocking, right? As for
temporary migrants, there's no limit. To be frank this is quite smart since the government will always be able
to meet the skill needs of the economy. Permanent migrants don’t take Australians’ jobs according to
research from the Committee for the Economic Development of Australia. Many would probably think
otherwise. You could say that the research shows that “the impact on wages and labour force participation of
locals was positive.”7
Now are these immigrants and asylum seekers good for Australia? As I’ve mentioned a couple of times
earlier, they help the governments economy quite a lot, they are a part of why Australia is thriving like it is
today. For the most part it’s not a one-sided relationship. Immigrants comes with their cultures and working
power while the government offers them a country to live in. That seems reasonable to me. Just imagine you
haven’t met your immigrant friends; how would your life be now? And for the ones of you who are
immigrants, how would your life be if you didn’t migrate to Australia? Or worse you got taken to the
offshore camps, which some of you or your parents might’ve experienced. Try and talk with the people
around you about it.
