between gambling and sport has come under particular scrutiny.

Assignment 4
Should gambling be legal?
Have you ever seen an ad for gambling, if so, you will have seen that the casinos try to lure people
in, mostly new players, they offer you a first-time deposit bonus or maybe they give you a free sign-
up bonus so that you can try it out for free. This method far from works on everyone, but some
people will get hooked after a while, and might end up spending a small amount of money in the
beginning, convincing themselves that they can control it. Their deposits gradually increase, and
you keep telling yourself that you have it under control. This essay will focus on pros and cons of
gambling in society and what the future could hold for gambling.
The concept of gambling is to have fun while having the opportunity of winning more money than
what you started with. “Our knowledge of gambling disorder and its neurological parallels to
cocaine addiction have evolved considerably since 2005, and a higher proportion of people who
engage with online slots or casino products get addicted to them than those who smoke cannabis
and get addicted.”1 Then you might ask yourself, why do we keep gambling legal? According to
the MPs arguments it’s kept legal because they are afraid of a black market emerging if they make
harder restrictions on users, while this may be what they say, the Gambling Commission dismisses
this as nonsense. So, you might now ask yourself, what does the MPs gain from keeping gambling
around with so little restrictions on addicted users? The answer is money “details emerged of 19
Conservative MPs and nine Labour MPs who received gifts and hospitality totalling £225,000 in
the past year. Much of this came from tax-avoiding online gambling corporations”.2 There are some
pros to gambling, you have the possibility to make much more money than what you put in, and it
could be very profitable if you bet with knowledge of the sports you are betting on. This requires
you know when to stop and putting limits on yourself which is where people fall in the traps, they
loose the sense of money, “It doesn’t feel like real money, just cause it’s so easy, it’s almost like
going shopping online”.3 There are prevention methods to addiction, you can at any time go on
begambleaware.org which is of course great, only downside to this is that people have to willingly
accept that they have a problem and need help. Many of the gambling companies are unlicensed
offshore companies who market their advertisement to multiple countries, this way the gambling
companies can make the most amount of money and as such they will be able to donate more
money. In today’s society gambling is starting to take over the youth, as Ben says, “and I definitely
put money on boxing, not understanding it just so I could be involved with what my mates were
talking about”.4 No one likes talking about when they lose, there is no fun in that, however the
moment someone wins big everyone knows. The big win your friend just got, ask him how much he
lost getting there, most will have lost way more money chasing the big win than what they won.
Adrenaline rush is what keep people going, spinning slot machines online and getting a few good
symbols in a row, they keep spinning because then can always win more.
What can be done to stop it you might ask; the only real solution is to either put a strict limit on
everyone or completely illegalise gambling, which would most likely just result in people gambling

on offshore gambling websites. Gambling websites are also incredibly good at getting their best
players to come back and play again, with their diverse kinds of offers and free money to get them
to play again. Amanda has a serios addiction and the gambling website Jackpotjoy knows exactly
how to take advantage of situations like these, “how are you finding things on site at the moment?”5
to which she responds “not had a good run really” the woman working for the gambling website
then proceeds to give Amanda a £100 bonus. This bonus was neither the first nor the last bonus
Amanda would receive from them. Casinos are companies that thrive of other people’s losses, it is
deeply immoral to not think about who is on the other end and consider whether they can afford to
gamble the amount they are doing.
Overall gambling is only beneficial for those not gambling, the companies and the politicians who
are getting bountiful gifts. There are ways to keep it legal and still have it regulated so people don’t
lose money that they cannot afford to lose. If the current laws around gambling isn’t changed there
will be many more to fall into the pit of gambling. The UK alone loses “more than £1.2bn”6 a year
on dealing with the social harm gambling causes on the society. The easy answer would be to make
gambling illegal, but with so many other things, people will find a way around the law. Usually
making things illegal would prevent most from gambling and therefor benefit the society positively.
The future of gambling is very unsure, if the casinos can keep gifting their way ahead and
politicians will keep receiving, they will be kept around and won’t be getting any harsher
restrictions any time soon. However it would be in the best interest of most to find a middle ground
where you can keep gambling legal and put restrictions on that stops people from being able to lose
more than they can afford to lose.
