Type of activity: Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI) Nurse Touch Leader Case 3

Score: 100% Correct

I started the scenario in ATI. Doctor Craig was upset because one of the nurses called

him to report that Mr. A. had fallen and she could not provide any assessment data or explain

what had happened to the patient. By answering the case scenario questions, I helped Beverly,

the charge nurse, to take the appropriate decisions to manage the situation. I demonstrated

evidence-based practice by using active listening to recognize the emotional aspect of a conflict

and collaborating to resolve it. I helped the two parts involved to establish mutual goals and

achieve a win-win outcome. Besides, I explained to Dr. Craig the importance of using the

Situation Background Assessment Recommendation (SBAR) communication that the nurse

used. My strengths were to recognize the differences between types of leadership. Dr. Craig

used an autocratic style while Beverly used a transformational style of leadership. In addition, I

made good clinical decisions by collecting information about the situation, which is Lewin’s first

stage of change, assessing the problem, determining if the change is needed, and educating

others regarding the need for change. In this case, the charge nurse discussed with Dr. Craig the

SBAR communication tool and when the autocratic style of leadership is most appropriate.

Although I obtained the maximum score in solving this case, I considered that my weaknesses in

managing conflicts are centered in using the language appropriately to promote

communication and understanding. This skill requires time and practice to develop.
