ACNP Standards and Scope of Practice

The primary role of trauma nurses is to stabilize patients and provide life-saving

measures. The scope of practice for trauma nurses encompasses triaging patients according to

their level of acuity; recognizing signs and symptoms of deterioration in clinically unstable

patients; providing first aid or cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if needed; administering

medications during emergency situations; performing wound care; communicating and

collaborating with physicians throughout the hospital stay of the patients; providing reassurance

to patients and their families during traumatic events and resources to patients who have

suffered a traumatic injury; reporting cases of abuse and neglect to protective services; working

with law enforcement in trauma cases resulting from criminal activity; and maintaining thorough

documentation of the care of trauma patients (Registered Nursing, 2020).

Ø Demonstrate ability to take vital signs manually as well as with an electronic device and

report to nurse preceptor any abnormal levels.

Ø Demonstrate ability to take lower extremity blood pressures.

Ø Be able to assess and palpate all patient pulses (apical, brachial, carotid, dorsalis, pedis,

femoral, popliteal, radial).

Ø Demonstrate the ability to set up an IV infusion (piggybacks, prime IV tubing, setup

pump), but not start.

Ø Demonstrate discontinuation of peripheral IV catheter.

Ø Demonstrate ability to assess and report IV complications and apply comfort measures

under the guidance of the RN preceptor.

Ø Recognize significant changes in patient’s parameters and immediately report to RN

preceptor.

Ø Manage pain effectively by offering patients non-pharmacological pain relief alternatives

and discuss effectiveness with RN preceptor.

Ø Demonstrate proper body mechanics when moving, turning, lifting, transferring, and

transporting patients.

Ø Provide postmortem care.

Ø Demonstrate knowledge of patient safety, patient fall risks, and fall prevention

Ø Admission process (prepare room, get linens, zero bed, connect beds, explain call light

system and phones).

arrhythmias, recognition, and care of arrhythmias.

Ø Demonstrate skill to monitor and report IV intake and output under supervision of the

RN preceptor.
