INSTRUCTIONAL PLAN THE BUMP AND SET PASS TECHNIQUES 2
Part I
Training Session Title: The Bump and Set pass techniques of Volleyball
Training Session Description: In this course we will be learning the proper form and position
necessary to perform the bump and set passes in volleyball. “Volleyball is a team sport played
with a ball and a net. There are teams on each side of the net. One team hits the ball over the net
and into the other team's court, the other team must then hit the ball back over the net and in
bounds within three tries without letting the ball touch the ground.” (Ken, 2020). In order to keep
the ball up without hitting the floor there are several different methods. The two main methods
are bumping and setting. The bump, professionally known as a pass, is the most basic and most
essential skill in volleyball. The bump is used to hit a ball that is below the head, or at your
platform as most volleyball players would call it and is typically used as the first touch to receive
a serve or to receive a hard-driven hit (WikiHow, 2019). “The set is an overhead pass used to
change the direction of the dig and put the ball in a good position for the spiker. It is usually the

Goal 1: To be able to set pass the ball back and forth by forming their hands like diamonds
Learning Objectives:
1. Students will be able to learn what a successful set pass looks by watching it being
2. Students will form their hands like diamonds above their head to attempt a successful set
pass.
3. Students will be able to perform a successful set pass by using the proper technique and
practice.

Part III
o The first and second weeks will focus on the set pass.
o The third and fourth weeks will focus on the bump set.
Week 1
I, and another physical education teacher will sit the students in two lines in the middle of the
gym. Using a volleyball, we will give a demonstration of the set pass. We will show them how to
position our hands in the shape of a diamond and pass the ball back and forth hitting the ball up
toward each other. We will then give the students the opportunity to practice what we have just
shown them.
Week 2
● One student will stand in front of each row and toss the ball up toward the student aligned
● The student the ball is being tossed to must be able to pass the ball back, using the
diamond hand position set, 4-6 times without losing control of the ball.

● Once the student setting the ball is able to pass the ball back 4-6 times without losing
control of the ball, they will switch places with the student that tossed the ball to them.
The student who initially tossed the ball will move to the back of the line. The next
● This will continue until every student in line has completed the exercise.

We will then give the students the opportunity to practice what we have just shown them.
Week 2
● Students will create 6 rows with half of each row facing each other and a distance of half
the gym
● Students will then pass the ball back and forth to each other for a total count of 10 (5 on
each side) using the forearm bump technique without losing control of the ball.
● Once both students have achieved the goal of passing the ball back and forth to each
other for a total count of 10 (without losing control of the ball). They will then move to
the back of the line giving the next two students an opportunity to complete the goal
● This will continue until every student in line has completed the exercise

Instrument: Set Pass Tally Chart and Bump Pass Tally Chart
● There will be separate charts for each team and myself and the other gym teacher will be
Criteria: Once every student has completed both exercises properly, I will set them up in circles
of 5 and have each circle compete to see which group can keep the ball up the longest using the
set and bump pass techniques. Each time the ball is hit up using a proper set/bump pass it will be
counted in a respective counter. There will be a tally chart for set passes and a tall chart for bump
passes. The groups with the highest set pass count and bump pass count will be the winners. This
will give feedback on how many students have learned the proper technique.
