Theme/Topic: Basketball

Duration of Unit: 5 weeks

(There will be one lesson a week for 30 min)

Unit Focus

Basketball is a team sport. It can be an enjoyable group activity that allows you to
make friends in your neighborhood, school, or community. By participating in
basketball regularly your heart and body will become stronger and be use to
physical activity. This will allow your muscles to be strengthened and have more
endurance. There are basic skills that need to be mastered in the sport of
basketball and will be with a lot of practice. This sport is all about improving and
getting better. Being on a team will allow you to do just that.

Concepts

In this unit all students should understand the concept of teamwork and sport.
Students should understand that the point of the game is to score points by
shooting the ball into the net. Students should also understand the concept of
teamwork is very important and players will not be successful unless this takes
place.

Goals and National standards

Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns. In the


game of basketball we will be focusing on dribbling, passing, receiving the
ball, shooting, and rebounding. (NASPE 1)
Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies,
and tactics as they apply to physical activities. More specifically plays, form,
and moves in BB (NASPE 2)
Participates in physical activity daily (NASPE 3)
Achieves and maintains health-enhancing level of physical activity (NASPE 4)
Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and
others. (NASPE 5)

What are the benefits of playing basketball throughout a lifetime?
What skills are necessary to play basketball successfully?
What rules of the game must one know to be able to participate in a
basketball game?
How can you continue to play and improve your basketball skills throughout
the years?

Essential Skills and Abilities


Dribbling
Player uses their legs by bending and keeping ball low to the ground and out
of reach of other players
Player moves their feet to position themselves correctly to protect the ball
and move to open spaces
Player hold arm out to protect the ball
Player uses strength to control the ball when dribbling
Player is aggressive and moves around the court

Passing
The ball is bounced on the ground to get to other players
Player bends legs and extends their knees and makes an accurate pass
Players thumbs are up and hands down when delivering a bounce pass
Players make a chest pass accurately to other players on the same team
Players keep arms straight when completing passes

Receiving the ball


Player stands with arms shoulder width apart
Ball is caught at belly button height
The opposite foot and hitting arm come forward when receiving the ball
The ball is received and player goes into triple threat

Shooting
Players uses BEEF form
Left hand holding ball and right hand directs it
Aim for the red square on the backboard
Follow through (Cookie Jar)

Rebounding
Player will stand between the basket and the other player
Player will use hips to box out
Player will jump to get to the ball first
Player will extend arms as high as they can to protect ball from others
Player will put basket back up if they have the chance

Learning Activities
Each students dribbles in a straight line across the gym at different speeds
while keeping control of the ball (5 times)
Students pass the ball who is stationary (5 bounce) (5 chest) (5 Over the
head)
A student is stationary and throws ball to several different spots and receiver
must move their feet to receive it.
Students play around the world and take shots from various spots around the
basket. Keep track of how many shots are made
Students stand on each side of the basketball net and throw ball up against
the backboard receive it and shot a basket. Next person in line receives it
and makes the shot

Lesson 1 Day 1
Targeted Standards/Goals

1. Students will demonstrate proper dribbling technique and posture in drills and
games. They will also perform cardiovascular endurance through warm up and
game play.

Player will stand between the basket and the other player
Player will use hips to box out
Player will jump to get to the ball first
Player will extend arms as high as they can to protect ball from others
Player will put basket back up if they have the chance

Conduct and carry out a tournament on the last day of the unit

Organization
1. Students will be split up into 4 teams and 2 courts will be used
2. A tournament will take place during today's last day of the unit
3. The team that wins in court 1 will play winner in court 2
4. The teams will perform to the best of their ability and of course they will be
assessed on improvement
