them together in an effective performance.
Technical Set up a small circular zone where the players will need to dribble 24 players, 5 cones, 24 5
Warm-Up / within. balls.
Stretches It’s important for players to look up and maintain close ball control
whilst trying to avoid their teammates.
As players dribble amongst each other, place a flag
approximately 5-10 metres away.
On the whistle, players must leave their ball and sprint around the
flag and back to their original ball.
On returning to the balls, the players must pick up their own
ball. Practice this drill a couple of times so the players get the hang
of the drill.
Now here is the fun part, just like musical chairs. Once the players
understand the drill, repeat the drill but eliminate one ball from the
circular zone whilst the players are running around the flag.
The player that misses out on a ball is eliminated from the drill.
Continue the drill until you have a winner.
N.B. If you have a big group eliminate as many as you want to begin
with.
3. Student leads the static stretches.
2 v2 1. Practice to develop defending skills in 2v2 situations. 8 x 15m x 15m squares. 2 7
defending Session format: pairs and 1 ball in each
Pair 1 pass the ball across to start the game and close the ball square.
down.
Pair 2 try to beat pair 1 and stop the ball on their line to score.
If 1 win the ball back, they try to score on 2’s line.
When play breaks down pair 2 restart the game and this
alternate pattern continues until the end of the game.
Teaching Points:
Nearest player closes the ball down quickly.
Slow down on opponent’s 1st touch.
Nearest defender forces player on ball to where his/her
partner is. Defend sideways on.
The second defender drops slightly deeper than the first so
that they can cover if the first defender gets beaten on
either side. Communicate with first defender.
LS: Year 10
Lesson Plan
If the ball is played across then the defenders change roles and
do the opposite job.
2. Conclude with discussion and peer assessment work
4v4 1. To start the game, one team plays the ball across to the other. 10
defending. 2. The team that play the ball defend and the attacking team try to
score by stopping the ball on the opposite line.
3. If the defending team win the ball back, they try to score on the
opposite line and the attackers become the defenders.
4. Each time play ends the game is restarted by the team who were
the attackers. Offside is in play.
Coaching Points:
The nearest player closes the ball down quickly and rest of
team push out quickly
Communication needed from behind.
