Dr. John Smith, Principal

Hypothetical High School
101 N. Imaginary Road
Hypothetical City, KS 12345

Dear Dr. Smith,

Please consider this letter of interest for the position of Assistant Band Director at Hypothetical
High School. I am currently completing my bachelor’s in music education at Kansas State
University and will graduate in the Spring of 2021. I believe I am the right candidate for this
position and the sum of my experiences thus far has equipped me to continue the strong legacy of
the Hypothetical High School Bands.

At KSU, I have been studying music education pedagogy under Dr. Phillip Payne, with an
emphasis on instrumental education. As an instrumentalist, I have performed as a hornist in the
Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, I have spent four years on tuba with the
KSU Marching Band, including one year as the music instructor, and one year as Student Staff.
Within the KSU band program, I also served as a student conductor with the University Band
under the guidance of Dr. Frank Tracz. These experiences combined to teach me how to properly
prepare, teach instrumental techniques in large and small settings, manage rehearsal time, and
better comprehend administrative tasks needed to run a program.

Furthermore, I have already worked to become an active and connected member of the greater
music education community. During my time at KSU, I started the music education podcast, Not
Your Forte. This podcast looks to provide a resource to music education students and current
teachers by inviting a variety of guests in the music community to help cover topics ranging from
music theory, pedagogy, and personal health.

In all, I believe the breadth of my experiences, my work ethic, and my commitment to continuous
learning make me an ideal candidate to serve the Hypothetical HS Band Program and the
Hypothetical City community.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,

Eric Tinkler
