Composer Notes
Ang Katawan ni Kristo (“The Body of Christ”) is a featured Communion song in the Filipino
liturgical music collection Gentle Strength, ed. 12052. In collaboration with Jesuit composer
Manoling Francisco, the goal of our collection was to provide songs that would appeal to all types
of assemblies, not just Filipino. Thus, using only one phrase in the Filipino language, “Ang
Katawan ni Kristo,” this song accomplishes our goal by providing an accessible melody that
promotes assembly participation. I wrote the lyrics in collaboration with Pia de Leon, a leader in
the Filipino Catholic community of Portland, Oregon. Pia provided wonderful cultural insights
and made an invaluable contribution to the lyrics.
While this was composed as a Communion song, it could also be sung as a closing/sending forth
song due to its driving energy. Following the refrain after the third verse, I usually encourage a
repeat of the refrain unaccompanied, with everyone clapping on the second and fourth beats. The
repeated coda follows as featured in the recording. A final ending is provided as an option for a
more definitive ending.
