PROBLEM SET #5 TRUSSES NAME: ___________________________________________

SUBMISSION DATE: YEAR & SECTION: ________________

INTRUCTIONS: Read the problems carefully. Solve the problems using any clean piece of paper. Show your COMPLETE
solution including drawings, if necessary. Box ALL intermediate and final answers and round them to the nearest thousandths
(three decimal places). Do not forget to affix the corresponding units. Write down your FULL NAME (SURNAME, GIVEN NAME
M.I.), STUDENT NUMBER, SECTION and PROBLEM SET No. and SIGNATURE on each page of your solution.

NOTE: Provide all your answers (axial forces and direction) in a box (refer to example below).

Situation 1. The Warren truss supporting the walkway is designed to support vertical 50-kN loads at B, D, F, and H. If the
truss is subjected to these loads, what are the resulting axial forces in members BC, CD, and CE? Assume the truss to be
simply supported. Use method of sections.

(EXAMPLE) FINAL ANSWERS:

MEMBER FORCE T or C
BC
CD
CE

Situation 2. Determine the largest tensile and compressive forces that occur in the members of the truss, and indicate the
members in which they occur if

(a) the dimension h = 0.1m:

(b) the dimension h = 0.5m.

Observe how a simple change affects the maximum

axial loads. Support reaction at D and C are hinge
and roller, respectively. Use method of joints.

SUBMISSION DATE: YEAR & SECTION: ________________

Situation 3. Remove the 500-lb force and then determine the greatest force P that can be applied to the truss so that none of
the members are subjected to a force exceeding either 800 lb in tension or 600 lb in compression. Use method of joints.

Situation 4. Determine the force in members GF, GD and CD of the truss and state if the members are in tension or compression.
Use method of sections.

Situation 5. Determine the force in members BC, GC, and GF of the truss and state if the members are in tension or
compression. Set P1 = 20kN and P2 = 10kN.

Integrity is doing the right thing even if no one is looking.
