SCIENTIFIC
Method
What is
SCIENCE?
Using Padlet, comment
what you already know
about Science.
What is Science?
T hink like a
SCIENTIST!
G ood Scientists
Conduct Experiments using the
SCIENTIFIC
METHOD
T he SCIENTIFIC METHOD is:
A series of steps used by
scientist to solve a problem or
answer a question.
G ood Scientists
ASK QUESTIONS
Step 1
A problem or a question must
be identified.
Examples
• How much water can a root
hair absorb?
• Why does a plant stem
bend toward the light?
• What effect does
temperature have on heart
rate?
G ood Scientists
DO REASEARCH
Step 2
Type of plant used, pot The different type of liquid The height of the plant will
size, amount of liquid, soil, (Soda, Juice, Water) being change because the plant
exposure to sunlight, etc. used. is being watered by
different types of juices.
G ood Scientists
RECORDS AND Analyze data
Step 5 Record Data What is Data?
Data is a collection of information gathered by
observation, questioning, or measurement.
Data that has been
• Surveys
collected must be • Quizzes
recorded, organized, • Test
• Exit Tickets
and analyzed to • Polls
determine whether it is
reliable.
G ood Scientists
RECORDS AND Analyze data
Step 5
Analyze Data
To examine (look at
closely) or to explain.
Graphs, Tables,
Charts are used to Does the data show whether
analyze and share
data. your hypothesis was
correct or incorrect?
G ood Scientists
Draw conclusions
Step 6
The evidence from the
experiment is used to determine
if the is hypothesis correct?

I can statement:
I can conduct an experiment using the scientific
Materials:
• Student lab sheet
method.
• Gummy Bears
• 4 plastic cups
• Vinegar
• Baking Soda
• Salt Water
• Water

Record the
MEAsUREMENTs
• Using a 12 inch ruler, we are going to
measure each gummy bear before
placing it in the different liquid.
(It’s ok if they are the same measurements)
Follow the
Procedures
Day 1
1. Choose 4 gummy bears and measure the length, the width, and height.
Record the measurements for Day 1.
2. Pour ½ cup of salt water, baking soda, water, and vinegar in 4 separate
small cups.
3. Place the small cups on the Gummy Bear Lab observation sheet.
4. Drop 1 gummy bear in each small cup and let the cups sit for one day.
Record the
VARARIABLES
Controlled variables Independent Variable Dependent Variables
(Only 1 Independent Variable)
Make
OBservations
• Place each cup in the correct
box on the Gummy Bear Lab
Observation Sheet.
