TEST PROCEDURE FOR EVALUATION OF ADDITIVE FOR FUEL

ECONOMY AND EMISSIONS

Category : Light Commercial Vehicle

1.0 PURPOSE

Evaluation of fuel additive for fuel economy and mass emissions

2.0 SCOPE

Evaluation of additive for fuel economy and emissions on a Light

commercial Diesel vehicle by testing on chassis dynamometer

3.0 TEST VEHICLE, FUEL AND ENGINE Oil

3.1 Test Vehicle

LCV of Tata make would be used for undertaking the testing on the
Chassis dynamometer

3.2 Fuel

Commercial BS-IV diesel fuel to be used for test and the same batch of
fuel will be used for complete evaluation i.e. with & without additive.

3.3 Engine Oil

Vehicle Manufacturer’s recommended engine oil shall be used and same

batch of oil shall be used throughout the test.

4.0 DE-INDUCTION & INDUCTION RUNS

A de-induction run without additive for 50 km will be carried out under

normal driving conditions followed by the baseline performance
evaluation with the commercial diesel fuel without any additive. The
base line performance will include fuel economy and mass emissions. An
induction run to be carried out for 50 km after baseline performance
with additized commercial diesel fuel. Fuel consumption & mass
emission test with additive treated fuel must be taken after completing
this induction run with the additive. After completion of induction run
the additive/device will be evaluated in terms of fuel economy and mass
emissions.

5.0 TEST PROCEDURE

The chassis dynamometer to be fully warmed up. The tyre pressure as
per manufacturer’s recommendations. Same driver will be used during
the tests. Test Cell temperature to be maintained at 25°C.
5.1 Driving Cycle Test

The Delhi bus driving cycle to be used for this evaluation. The driving
cycle test for emission measurements and fuel economy shall be carried
out with hot start (by running 3 cycles) followed by 4 measurements
cycles.

The inertia loading would be based on GVW. The driving cycle fuel
consumption will be based on gravimetric measurement. The carbon
balance FE will also be recorded from the exhaust gas concentration
measured during the test. The test will be repeated 2 times and average
will be considered as the final result. The exhaust gas concentration of
CO, THC, NOx & CO2 will be measured and expressed in g/km.

5.2 Constant Speed Test

Test shall be conducted on chassis dynamometer using road load

simulation mode at constant speeds of 40, 60 & 80 km/hr.

6.0 RESULTS

6.1 Five readings of fuel consumption will be reported in each constant

speed mode and the average of these 5 readings in each mode shall be
recorded.

6.2 Driving cycle test: For driving cycle, fuel consumption and exhaust mass
emission, the final result will be average of 2 tests.

6.3 The average fuel consumption in each of the constant speed mode and
the average fuel consumption in the driving cycle mode shall be
multiplied by the following weighing factors:
