PART A.

Read the following essay “Catch the Three Tigers” (by Jung Hee Kang) and do the
exercises proposed below.

1. How many paragraphs does the essay have?

● 6 paragraphs.

2. Just as a single paragraph has a topic sentence which introduces the paragraph topic and
the writer’s opinion and method, so a thesis statement is the most important element of an essay.
These statements contain the writer’s limited object, opinion or attitude, and possibly a MAP,
which contains the elements which will be discussed in the body of the essay. Please, write the
thesis statement and identify the elements of the MAP


Introduction: Every year many freshmen start college life with their ambition and challenge.
Some students enjoy their school life, but others do not. What are the important qualities to
have an enjoyable campus life? How can freshmen adapt to the new environment and be a
good student? It is very simple.

Thesis statement: The three main qualities for this delightful school and being a good
student are a positive attitude, obligation of the school's rules, and a clear, firm goal after
graduation.

Elements of MAP, these are: Positive attitude, obligation of the school's rules, and a clear,
firm goal after graduation.

3. How many paragraphs does the author use to develop the first element of the MAP?

● The Author developed the first element of the MAP using just one paragraph.

4. How many paragraphs does the author use to develop the second element of the MAP?

● The second element of the MAP was developed using two different paragraphs.

5. How many paragraphs does the author use to develop the body of the essay?

● The author used exactly four paragraphs to develop the body of the text.

● About the fourth paragraph, the answer is yes because this part supports the development of
the second element of the MAP, “obligation of the school's rules”.

10. What method does the author use to support the first item of the MAP? (e.g. comparison,
explanation, process, exemplification, classification, etc.)

● The author used the exemplification as a method to support and gives us the idea of the first
item of the MAP.

11. Which paragraphs does the author use to develop the second item of the MAP? What are the
two items the author includes to develop this second element of the MAP?

● The third and fourth paragraphs were used by the author to develop the second element of
the MAP.
● The ideas or items that the author includes are “attending classes” and “doing homework or
assignments and extra study”.

12. What personal comment does the author make to conclude that attendance is important to be
successful in school life? (Write it down).

● Personal Comment: “As this person's case illustrates, one's devotion to class attendance,
despite great odds, can lead to a productive academic life and help one gain the respect of
others.”

13. What general comment does the author make to conclude that homework and extra study
helps to improve academic life? (Write it down)

● General Comment: “Doing homework and extra study help students to understand lectures
which are given in the classes and to make the knowledge theirs. If students do well on
assignments and submit papers on time, they will receive good grades”

14. What method does the writer use to support his third topic sentence (third item of the MAP)?
Explain.

● The author used to support the third item of the MAP these methods: exemplification and
comparison because he uses personal experience to explain the idea and he compares his
academic life with the academic life of two of his scholar friends.

15. Does the author use any concluding signal to finish his essay?
● The author did not use a concluding signal because he did not start his conclusion with any
transition words or frame marker.

16. Out of the three final sentences contained in the concluding paragraph, one of them is a
restatement of the MAP, and another is a personal comment or opinion of the author. Please,
identify and write down these statements.

● Restatement of the MAP: “These three qualities, having a positive attitude, observing the
school's rules and making a clear, firm goal, are essential for students to have an enjoyable,
fruitful college life.”
