Data analysis is an important aspect in any study. It helps to consolidate data and come up

with a realistic conclusion of the data. There are two types of data analysis in a research (Polit &

Beck, 2018). One of the most common types of data analysis is the descriptive method. In this

method a summary of the examinations of the participants is given in forms of tables, graphs or

any other statistical form. In this discussion, I will examine a study by Meeker, Finnell &

Othman (2011) that in intend to replicate and give the method of data analysis used. An

elaboration of the suitability of the method will be articulated. The key analysis terms found in

other studies will be also be discussed.

Meeker, Finnell & Othman (2011) used the descriptive statistic method to analyze the data

collected from various databases like the CINAHL, PsycInfo databases regarding families with

patients suffering from chronic pain. The method uses a matrix to compare different types of

data. In the study, Garrard’s (1999) matrix was used. The researchers used the method since

the study involves a high volume of data and a relationship between the families and pain

resiliency for the patients had to be found.

The following key terms were evident from other studies.

1. Matrix: This term refers to the statistical calculations that help to illustrate a relationship

between various variables in a research.

2. Statistics: This term refers to the mathematical calculations that are used in the analysis

of data in research. This term is commonly used in quantitative analysis

3. Tabular: This term refer to the representation of data in tables for analysis. It is used in

quantitative researches where various results from different participants of a study is

articulated ready for the calculation using the selected methods.
