Diet/Lifestyle Report

By: Luis Angel Atilano Martinez

Often times, due to the rush of daily routine, many of us go through our days without
thinking a bit and carefully about our habits, our diet or our lifestyle. We think that with
only eating three times a day we are healthy or we have a good diet. But all of this is
nothing more than false ideas to justify our bad and unhealthy lifestyles. Well, I considered
myself one of those people.

At the beginning of this unit. I began to collect information about my lifestyle, eating
habits, diet, and physical activity. First, I completed an Excel template with the food I ate
for two weeks. Secondly, I began to determine what my lifestyle was, how much I did, how
much I slept, what activities I did to keep my mental health in good condition, as well as
what were the nutritional contributions of certain foods that were in my diet, with these
data, I was able to determine that I had a somewhat healthy lifestyle, but that it could be
improved in certain aspects.

My personal diet report showed that I was consuming large portions of carbohydrates on a
daily basis, likewise the second largest portion was protein and the least I consumed were
vitamins and minerals that came from vegetables, fruits and legumes. My daily routine in
general terms starts from very early in the morning, I eat my breakfast, which is generally
made up of many carbohydrates, whether they are cassava, green banana, yam, potato or
bread, accompanied by coastal cheese or eggs and coffee with milk, after this I go out to
play soccer or run, go to classes until it is time for lunch, at home a lunch is always made
up of soup of any meat, be it sin, beef, chicken or rabbit and rice and a little lettuce,
cucumber and tomato salad and for dinner it is typical to eat fast food and junk food, soft
drinks, practically unhealthy food, processed food and many snacks.

Doing a reflective analysis about my lifestyle, my physical condition and my diet, I was
able to determine that for the diet that I eat I am in very good physical condition, this
reminded me of a topic that we studied in class, this was the diet of The Maasai, an African
tribe that consumes a lot of fat and a lot of meat, even drank blood, but who have the lowest
cholesterol levels compared to western diets, and that this was possible because they are
great athletes. Without a doubt I feel a little identified with them. However, I would
consider that a slightly more balanced diet, such as the Nordic one, would be healthier for
me, although since I exercise a lot my current diet covers that energy requirement, but I
should eat more vegetables and fruits. I think it is a habit that will not be difficult to change
because I like vegetables and fruits, but my family does not, and they are the ones who
prepare the food, but otherwise I will eat many more vegetables and fruits.

Finally, during this module we learned about many diets and various very interesting
aspects of healthy eating. I learned about the Maasai diet and veganism, which by the way
is a very interesting lifestyle and that in addition to that is a movement that among its
struggle is caring for animals and in turn learning from one as contrary as that of the
Maasai, their hunter culture and lifestyle and dependent on animals for survival.
