Unit Topic: Writing An Email

Unit Title: What are the similarities & differences between writing an email and writing a

letter?

National or State Academic Content Standards:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.8.7: Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of using

different mediums (e.g., print or digital text, video, multimedia) to present a particular topic or

idea.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.6.1: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard

English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.6.2: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard

English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.3.9: Compare and contrast the most important points and key

details presented in two texts on the same topic.

Learning Goal:

 Students will be able to (SWBAT) identify the 5 main parts (Heading, Greeting, Body,

Closing and Signature) of an email writing.

 SWBAT compare and contrast the writing format of a letter and an email

 SWBAT address and write an email to a peer or teacher.

Measurable Objectives:

 When given the opportunity, students will be able to (SWBAT) correctly identify the 5

main parts of an email 4 out of 5 opportunities

 SWBAT correctly identify the different components of a heading in an email (recipient

address & subject line) and letter ( mailing address & date) 4 out of 5 opportunities.
