Q.1 (a) Single effect evaporator concentrating weak liquor containing 04 3 PDK
4% solids to 55% solids (by weight) is fed with 5000 kg/h of
weak liquor. Calculate: a) water evaporated per hour, and b)
flow rate of thick liquor.
(b) A solution of caustic soda in water contains 20% NaOH (by wt.) 04 2 VMP
at 333 K. The density of the solution is 1.196 kg/l. Find molarity,
normality and molality of the solution.
(c) A stream of carbon dioxide flowing at a rate of 100 kmol/min is 04 4 DTB
heated from 298 K to 383 K. calculate the heat that must be
transferred using Cp0

xylene by weight is in contact with its vapour at 373 K.
Calculate the total pressure and molar composition of the liquid
and vapour. Vapour pressure data at 373 K: Benzene : 178.6
kPa, Toluene : 74.6 kPa, Xylene : 28 kPa

(a) The diameter and height of a vertical cylindrical tank are 5 ft and 03 1 VMP
6 ft 6 inch respectively. It is full up to 75% height with carbon
tetrachloride (CCl4), the density of which is 1.6 kg/lit. Find the
mass in kg.
(b) The feed to a continuous fractionating column analyses by 04 3 PDK
weight 28% benzene and 72% toluene. The analysis of the
distillate shows 52% benzene and 5% benzene was found in the
bottom product. Calculate the amount of distillate and bottom
product per 1000 kg/h. Also calculate the % recovery of
benzene.
(c) A natural gas has the following composition by volume: CH4: 07 2 VMP

82%, C2H6: 12% and N2: 6%. Calculate the density of gas at 288
K and 101.325 kPa and composition in weight %.
Q.3 (a) Discuss the various methods involved for solving material 03 3 PDK
balance problems without chemical reactions.

(b) In a double effect evaporator plant, the second effect is 04 1 VMP


maintained under vaccum of 475 torr (mm Hg). Find the
absolute pressure in kPa, bar and psi.

(c) The waste acid from a nitrating process containing 20% HNO 3, 07 3 PDK
55% H2SO4 and 25% H2O by weight is to be concentrated by
addition of concentrated Sulphuric acid containing 95% H2SO4
and concentrated nitric acid containing 90% HNO3 to get desired
mixed acid containing 26 % HNO3 and 60% H2SO4. Calculate
the quantities of waste acid and concentrated acids required for
1000 kg of desired acid.

Q.3 (a) Using Watson equation, calculate latent heat of vaporization of 03 4 DTB
acetone at 353 K.
Data: Latent heat of acetone at 329.4K = 29121 KJ/kmol,

(b) Calculate the heat of formation of glycerol liquid (C 3H8O3) at 03 4 DTB
298 K from its elements using Hess’s law. Data: heat of
formation of CO2 (g) = -393.51 KJ/mol, Heat of formation of
H2O(l) = -285.83 KJ/mol, heat of combustion of glycerol liquid at
298 K = -1659.10 KJ/mol

(c) Calculate the heat of reaction at 800 K for following reaction 04 4 DTB
