Q. No. Question Marks CO Faculty

Q.1 (a) Consider a system in which following reaction occurs: 04 4 PDK

CH4(g)+H2O(g)→CO(g)+3H2(g) and
CH4(g)+ 2H2O(g)→CO2(g)+4H2(g).If there are present initially 2 mole of CH 4 and 3
mole of H2O.Derive the expression for the mole fractions of the components in
terms of extent of the reactions.

(c) Explain the minimum boiling azeotropes and maximum boiling azeotropes 04 1 KRR
with suitable examples.

Q.2 (a) Derive the Phase rule for non-reacting system explaining each term associated 03 1 KRR
with the same.
(b) The experimental pressure volume data for benzene at 675K from a very low 04 2 RCG
pressure about 75 bar may be approximated by the equation V=0.0561(1/P –
0.0046), where V is in m3/mol and pressure is in bar. What is fugacity of
benzene at 1 bar and 675 K ?
(c) Define partial molar properties and explain various methods for evaluation of 07 2 PDK
partial molar properties.
OR
(a) Discuss Raoult's Law and Henry's Law explaining each term associated with 03 1 KRR
them with their applicability.
(b) Discuss Lewis-Randall rule and its significance. 04 1 RCG
(c) Define fugacity and fugacity coefficient. Discuss any two methods to evaluate 07 2 RCG
fugacity coefficient

Q.3 (a) Write a brief note on ideal solutions 03 1 RCG

(b) Assuming that carbonated water contains only CO2(1) and H2O(2). Determine 04 1 KRR
the compositions of the vapor and liquid phases in a sealed can of “soda” and
the pressure exerted on the can at 10 oC.
Henry’s constant for CO2 in water at 10 oC is about 990 bar.

(b) At 300K and 1bar the volumetric data for the liquid mixture of benzene and 04 2 PDK
cyclohexane are represented by V=109.4 x 10 -6x – 2.64x10-6x , where x is the
mole fraction of benzene and V has the unit of m 3/mol. Find expression for
partial molar volumes of benzene and cyclohexane.
