University Consultant Comments:

From the very beginning, Malinka was well planned and eager to succeed. Malinka developed a very good
relationship with her students, colleagues and other school staff and participated in many school activities.
The students clearly enjoyed Malinka in the classroom—she displayed both kindness and assertiveness
consistently in her dealings with students and developed a strong classroom leadership throughout the
internship.

Malinka created an effective learning environment by learning to organize and direct student learning using a
variety of teaching strategies. She not only willingly accepted feedback but she also sought feedback. Her
reflective practitioner skills are impressive, as is her ability to truly garner the students’ attention as she
teaches.

Malinka responded well to the demands of teaching during a world pandemic. She transitioned to online
teaching seamlessly.

Malinka did well in all course aspects of her internship and I am confident she will make an excellent teacher.

Intern Teacher’s Descriptive Report:

My third professional semester has been an amazing experience where I learned, developed, and grew in the
teaching profession. My ability to be vulnerable in teaching something I did not have a major in, Social 20, and
to further my knowledge in physical education and health were great attributes to my professional
development.

Planning and Preparation: Throughout my internship, I planned for grades 8-10 physical education, grade 6
and 9 health, grade 7 sport for life, and social studies 20-2. I taught a variety of lessons and units throughout
the semester that I was responsible for preparing. Prior to the semester starting, I had time to work on my
long-range plans and my unit plans as well. This helped me in the future to hit the curricular objectives and
kept me organized when I was executing my lessons.
Techniques of Instruction: Throughout my internship, I employed a variety of strategies, including direct
instruction, technology-infused lessons, modeling, cooperative learning, and teaching games for
understanding. One of my aims was to engage different strategies that would give me a better understanding
of what learning activities worked best for different students. This worked well and I know every student is
different and I am still learning how I can improve my instructional techniques.

Classroom Management and Leadership: Classroom management is an area of growth that I worked hard at,
throughout my internship. I have used strategies like wait-time, call on, raising hands, repetition, etc. I have
also learned how to become more confident in my expectations for my classroom and make them clear to my
students. I explored a wide variety of management techniques to help build mutual respect in the classroom. I
learned that my techniques varied with the different groups that I taught—learning to adapt to the diverse
needs of the students or unique situations within the classroom. I also learned that relationships are important
and I made a point to get to know each student I taught. Building relationships with my students was key to
earning their respect and running an effective classroom. I believe my classroom inclusiveness and clear
expectations help develop a sense of a teacher/student team.

Evaluation of Student Learning: Assessment is an ongoing process that can be challenging to keep up with
the consistency of fairness, respect, and integrity. For the summative assessment, I would do daily marks in
physical education, health, and sport for life. I would also do some skill-based, project-based,
critically-thinking, and test-based summative assessments. Formative assessment was on-going throughout
lessons. I would try to have a formative assessment during and at the end of each lesson. These ranged from
checking in, observing, questioning, exit slips, feedback, etc. I have realized that you can formatively assess
students in numerous ways and that I do not have to stick to one way that I know works.

Areas for Growth: There are still many areas for growth in my new teaching career that I am excited about; like
my professional development, conflict management, and becoming a lifelong learner. As a new teacher I
know there will be challenges and hardships but I am thrilled to work with other teachers, administrators, and
staff to improve my development as a teacher. I will always be grateful for constructive feedback on my
teaching and for the opportunities to further my professional development for the sake of my students

and myself.

Overall, I am very thankful for my experience at Our Lady Mount Pleasant school. I have grown an incredible
amount throughout this experience and I am excited to put it into practice. I am grateful for the staff at the
school and the university that helped me accomplish my goals and overcome challenging situations. This
internship has molded me into the teacher I am becoming today and that makes me overjoyed. Like the
OLMP district motto states: Choose Joy! And I will for the next experience and opportunities that lay ahead.

Teacher Mentor Comments:

PREPARATION, PLANNING AND ORGANIZATION:
Throughout Malinka's student teaching experience, she is always very well prepared with her planning and
organization for all of her lessons. She spent a lot of hours outside of her allocated prep time planning,
researching and preparing her lessons for the following day, as well as for future lessons. Malinka plans in a
manner where she is cognizant of the diversity within her classroom environment, and the multiple learning
styles of her students. Her lesson objectives are clear and comprehensive, and progress smoothly which
maintains student attentiveness. Malinka effectively and efficiently adjusts lessons as needed with daily
reflective practice, to make sure her classes continue to show growth. All of her lesson plans correlate directly
with the program of studies to meet specific learning outcomes and result in clear, logical and progressive
planning. Malinka continues to work hard in this area to excel as a teacher.

TEACHING SKILLS, STRATEGIES AND ASSESSMENT:

Malinka implements a number of teaching skills and strategies within the gymnasium and classroom. Her
lessons use structure with progressions in a safe environment, and she recognizes the need to maximize
instructional time and minimize distractions. In the gymnasium, Malinka does this by using clear and concise
instructions, continually checking for student understanding, using the whiteboard to introduce new skills and
activities, and continually providing verbal feedback to create student success. In the classroom, she also
captivates her students with worksheets, technology, class discussions and student choice within
assignments. Finally, Malinka has adapted nicely to on-line school teaching using Google Classroom to
provide virtual material (Ie. worksheets, workouts, and class challenges) to keep her students engaged. She
continues to show growth in this area, has the ability to adapt to any circumstance, and works hard to build
connections with her students. Malinka's assessment strategies include; On-going observation with
informative feedback, a PE Daily Affective mark book on student progress, rubrics, and worksheets/projects.
She effectively incorporates her assessments to fit the needs of her students.

CLASSROOM LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT:

Malinka has progressed nicely within this area in both the gymnasium and classroom. She works hard to gain
the trust of her students by appropriately balancing being fair but firm, and by consistently instilling the normal
routines of the gymnasium and classroom. Malinka is focused on finding ways to connect with all of her
students to gain their trust, and this allows her to develop a successful learning environment. She teaches a
few large classes with 35 plus students, and demonstrates confidence to get the most out of the students
within a safe environment. Malinka really enjoys the students, and her easy going personality combined with
a good sense of humor, allows her to build a strong rapport with her classes.

PROFESSIONAL ATTRIBUTES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Malinka approaches each day as a professional teacher, with appropriate attire to the environments she
teaches in. She's involved in supervision, PE classroom set-up and clean-up, class coverage, teacher
observations, and will coach if the opportunity is there. Her dedication to the teaching profession is evident,
and she is eager to engage in practices that foster her growth as a future educator.

Teacher Mentor Comments:

Preparation, Planning, and Organization
Malinka immediately created long range plans in collaboration with her mentor teachers. She is consistently
very well prepared to teach lessons. Malinka spent a lot of time gaining knowledge in areas in the course and
the results of her efforts were visible. Her lessons state clear objectives and clearly identify learning goals that
are communicated to students. Malinka is intentional about connecting each lesson to the big concepts of her
units. Pacing is an area in which Malinka excels and she always has activities for enrichment prepared. Malinka
was very flexible and adaptable with her plans as our course moved to synchronous online learning.

Teaching Skills, Strategies, and Assessments

Malinka scaffolded student learning and was intentional about reviewing content daily. Malinka made a point to
collect prior student knowledge on a topic before beginning and she used a balance of student-centred and
teacher-centred strategies. Malinka’s background in physical education has been an asset to her social studies
classroom; her lessons included much needed opportunities for movement. Malinka worked hard to provide
students with a variety of technology enhanced lessons. She facilitated digital scavenger hunts and she curated
lessons through edpuzzle. Malinka also used Kahoot!, infographics, and videos in her lessons. Malinka guided
students through online research, ensuring they knew how and where to find reliable sources. Malinka provided
outcomes-based rubrics to make expectations clear to students, she marked assessments in a timely manner,
and included helpful feedback. Malinka worked hard to provide her students with choice in both formative and
summative assessments.

Classroom Leadership and Management

Malinka’s gentle humour creates a very positive classroom environment. She responds to students with
encouragement and affirmations. Malinka shows strength in establishing rapport with students, which fostered
student trust and motivation.

Professional Attributes and Responsibilities

Malinka conducted herself very professionally; she was open to all advice and implemented feedback with
grace. Malinka has proven herself to be a reflective teacher; this has fostered her growth throughout the
semester. Malinka took on extra responsibilities, including organizing staff lunches, set-up and take-down for
staff events, and facilitating parent-student-teacher interviews. Malinka truly knows what it means to be a
teacher within a greater school community.

Administrator Comments:
Malinka did a great job during her placement at OLMP School. She had strong classroom management and
contributed to building school culture. I found her to have strong relationship building skills with students as
she was frequently observed circulating to each student to connect and teach. She worked to establish
inclusive environments in her classes and to find ways to ensure all were engaged and developing. In
Physical Education classes she worked to find activities that fostered physical literacy and enjoyment for all
students of all abilities. Her positive attitude and ability to connect with others will be a strength for her in the
future.
