Sleep Saviours
1 If you have to pull yourself out of bed every morning, chances are you haven't had adequate
rest. But, if you wake up feeling groggy and lethargic, you've probably overslept. Practioners of
Traditional Medicine advise getting some shuteye before midnight when the body enters the calm
phase. The best time to sleep is from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. as the day gets dark, the pineal gland begins to
release melatonin which not only makes you drowsy and sleepy but strengthens the immune system 5
and reduces your risk of heart problem.
2 Ignoring sleep signals and trying to beat sleep will only leave you wide awake when you're
ready for bed. Artificial light supposedly kills the release of melatonin, so if you keep the lights on 10
after 10 p.m., you'll find it harder to sleep. Staying up past midnight isn't a good idea as it works
against your bio-rhythms and your body won't be able to renew and heal itself during that crucial time.
you'll end up feeling tired, constipated and depressed the next morning.

spirit and sharpen the mind. The less you remember of your dreams, the better as dreams are
interpreted as energy flow imbalance. Disrupted energy flow can cause you to have difficulty falling
asleep or wake up during the night. It also triggers excessive dreams and nightmares.

4 Nightmares stem from disharmony within the body. For instance, unpleasant dreams about
fire and smoke could be a sign of heart disorders. If you cry in your dreams, they could be a problem
with your lungs but if you laugh too much, it could also mean a heart problem. Dreams of water or
drowning may point to a kidney dysfunction or that you bladder is full and you need to run to the toilet 25
fast! Strengthening your bladder will help you to hold your urine throughout the night.
5 Foods like rice, wholegrain pasta, vegetables, oats and chocolate contain tryptophan, the
amino acid that produces serotonin to help you nod off easily. Include these in your dinner to relax the 30
brain and nerves. Before you knock off, drink some milk. Milk contains calcium which helps the brain
use tryptophan to manufacture melatonin, a natural relaxant. Alternatively drink chamomile, a herb
