Jake Sully ends up on Pandora in the place of his twin brother after his brother passes away. At

the time he arrives, it feels like he’s a lost soul with no fear of losing anything sand doesn’t seem to have

strong beliefs. I am certain many people can relate to his character. His beliefs seem nonexistent besides

following orders given by others and he probably has not thought of anything in a long time.

When Jakes ends up in the forest alone, Neytiri is going to kill him but then stops when a sign

from Ewya appears. She is not sure what this means but knows it’s important. Why save him? Why

save anyone? We all need guidance when we are not familiar. Another sign comes when Jake is covered

by the pure spirits of Ewya. He tries to swat them away, as anyone else would do when you are not

familiar with anything spiritual. “It is hard to fill a cup that is already full” (Cameron, 2009). I believe

Jake knows this statement is true but does not want to admit it. It seems that Jake does not pay any mind

to those words because he does not know what it means. He has one purpose and that’s to get what

benefits him.

I would probably categorize Jake as a non-believer of God in this instance. He does not know

what this mighty power, Ewya, is when it’s mentioned. How would he know if he’s never been exposed

to it? Many times, we are lost and taken by mistaken simply because someone else assumes you

understand. We see the world differently and Jake is no exception. Jake seems as if he questions the all

mighty power because he does not understand it. However, his views begin to change as he begins to

learn the ways of the Omaticaya ways. He begins to question his reality and things he has been taught.

Jake begins to struggle to know the purpose of life when he finds himself connecting with Ewya, the

animals, the forest, and the Omaticaya people.

The Omaticaya people see everything as sacred. This is easily comparable to one’s beliefs. “I

see you” (Cameron, 2009) is more than just words. Jake struggles to know exactly what impact this

meaning has. He does not understand what it means to “see through someone” (Cameron, 2009) means

you see into a person and who they really are. Jake gets a feel of this when the bond between a horse and

him is made through shahaylu. Shahaylu is the sacred bond between the Omaticaya people and forest

animals (Cameron, 2009). As Jake sits on the horse, he’s beginning to feel the animal’s spirit. He finally

understands everything Neytiri has been teaching him about the forest when he is to kill one of the forest

animals. The prayer he says in the native language is so the animal can be at peace. This is when you see

the true belief in his face. Jake now believes in Ewya and everything connected to her.

“All energy is only borrowed and then you have to give it back” (Cameron, 2009), true meaning

of death or life after death. We are in a borrowed environment that must be returned one day. Jake found

his calling in the Omaticaya people and made the decision to join them permanently. He did what any

person would have done when their time comes. He committed to his faith and path.
