1. Herbs and Aromatic Plants
1. Herbs and Aromatic Plants
Aromatic plants can be defined as plants which possess
odoriferous oil in either of their organs or sometimes
even in the whole plant.
plant.

The commonly used terms associated with aromatic plants

includes herbs, spices and essential oils.
oils.
Herbs are aromatic plants that contain phytonutrients and are
used for flavoring foods and beverages.
beverages.
When people in North America and Europe use the term ‘spice’,
they mean an aromatic plant that comes from tropical regions.
regions.
2. Essential oils
Most of the time essential oils are characterized as an aromatic
substances produced from aromatic plants which are having the
original aroma of the odoriferous plants named essential oils.

4. Significance of the sector in the national economy

Ethiopia Imports more than 700 tones of essential oils

annually (minimum 350 Million birr) (Addis Ababa
Development Study Associates (2008)) ≈ 18.42 USD

In 2012 it reached more than 1800 tones (Custom

Authority)≈900 million birr≈46.15 Million USD annually

In addition, the imported processed products of

aromatic plants and products are available in every
supermarkets and shops of the country.

Indicating Ethiopia is spending huge foreign currency

for importation of these items in addition to essential
oils
In Ethiopia, 80-90% of the animals and 70-80%
of the human beings are reported to be treated
with plant based traditional medicines (WHO,
2006; Endashaw, 2007)

Ethiopia spends about 8 billion birr

for importation of medicines

The Existane huge market potential. All

these contributes towards poverty
A lot is expected from the sector to contribute in reducing the huge
amount of money allocated for importation of MAPs products. 6
