1. Use inductive reasoning to predict the next letter in the following list,
O, T, T, F, F, S, S, E,?
 Observe that all the alphabets are the first letters from words used for counting. Meaning, it can
be predicted that the next counting number will be nine. Therefore, the following letter will be
N.
2. Use deductive reasoning to show that the following procedure always produces a number that is
equal to the original number:
a. Pick a number. Multiply the number by 5 and add 10. Divide the sum by 5, and subtract 2.
SOLUTION:
- Let n represent the original number.
- Multiply n by 5: 5n
- Add 10 to the product: 10 + 5n
- Divide the sum by 5: 10 + 5n/5 = 2 + n
- Subtract the quotient by 2: 2 + n – 2 = n

We started with n and ended with n after following the given procedure. This means that
the given procedure produces a number that is the same as original number.

b. Pick a number. Add 3 to the number and multiple the sum by 2. Subtract 6 from the product
then divide the result by 2.
SOLUTION:
- Let n represent the original number.
- Add 3 to the n: n+3
- Multiply the sum by 2: 2n+6
- Subtract the product by 6: 2n+6-6 = 2n
- Divide the difference by 2: 2n/2 = n

We started with n and ended with n after following the given procedure. This means that
the given procedure produces a number that is the same as original number.

3. Use deductive reasoning to show that the following procedure produces a perfect cube.
Pick 3 consecutive integers. Multiply these three consecutive integers and then add the middle
integer to the product.

SOLUTION:
- Let 1,2,3 represents the 3 consecutive integers.
- Multiply these three consecutive integers: 1 x 2 x 3 = 6
- Add middle integer to the product: 6+2= 8

We started with 1,2,3 and ended with 8 after following the given procedure. This means that
the given procedure produces a perfect cube.
