AP Physics 2 Force felt by a Charge Moving through a Magnetic Field

1) An electron (q = e = -1.6x10-19C…but then you already knew that…) travels with velocity 500
m/s in the +x direction, through a point in space where the magnetic field is 0.15 T in the +y
direction and the electric field is 250 volt/meter in the +z direction.
a) To the right of the coordinate system:
i) Draw the electron, with an arrow to represent its velocity (label it “v”).
ii) Draw an arrow to represent the magnetic field (label it “B”)
iii) Draw an arrow to represent the electric field (label it “E”)
d) Calculate the electric force (FE). Start with the applicable equation in “vector” form. Careful
with signs!

Magnitude ______________ Direction (e.g., -y) _______________

e) Calculate the magnetic force (FB). Start with the applicable equation in “vector” form.
Careful with signs!

Magnitude ______________ Direction (e.g., -y) _______________

e) What is the net force felt by the electron?
Magnitude ______________ Direction (e.g., -y) _______________
