E1.1 Gender Equal Rights

In today's society whether it;s right or wrong you will always be judged for your opinion.

Steven Pinker’s definition of a “ dangerous idea” is an idea that is criticized because they are

thought to destroy the prevailing moral order. In other words, a “ dangerous idea” is an opinion

or idea that no one likes to hear because it is not considered “normal” to society. Those who

speak out on an issue, are immediately seen as an odd person, no matter what side you are on for

the matter. Gender equal rights is considered a dangerous idea because not many people like to

talk about it or agree with it.

For many years there has always been an issue with equality between genders and it still goes

on till this day. Women who have the same job/position as men are being paid less solemnly

because of their gender, women not being hired for a certain job because people believe they will

not be able to do a “man's work”. “Many people fear that feminism will mean that men will

eventually lose out – of power, influence, impact, authority, and control, and economic

opportunities” (Caprino). People truly believe that if equality existed between genders that

everything will go completely south, and that is just their ego talking. Gender equality will help

out tremendously with business growth, a balanced society, and a happy population, no one is

trying to overthrow the other. For many generations women are seen to only be able to do certain

things; be a stay at home mother, cook, clean, and support her husband and that is all. “Many

people fear that feminism will overturn time-honored traditions, religious beliefs and established

gender roles, and that feels scary and wrong” (Caprino). This has been going on for many years,

that people see it as some sort of “tradition” and something that is normal, which is completely

wrong. Everyone should be able to see others capable of doing more.

Men rarely experience sexism, so they don’t always recognise it when it’s happening right in

front of them, or, even more disturbingly, when they are the ones perpetrating it. Gender equal

rights should not be viewed as a “dangerous idea”, nothing is abnormal about wanting to be

treated equally, being paid equally for doing the same job, and wanting people to stop assuming

one's capability because of their gender. Gender inequality is a root cause of violence against

women, the main uses of violence against women are: men’s control of decision making and

limits to women’s independence, rigid gender roles and stereotypes, and male relationships that

emphasise aggression and disrespect towards women. “Over time I watched this routine play out

in different ways. Arms slinked around waists, rear ends tapped, shoulders rubbed. Sometimes

the waitresses pushed back — but only a little” (Burke 1), men think they can do whatever they

want, whenever they want and treat women as if they were objects and that is because of the

many times they have gotten away with it.

Regardless of where you live, gender equality is a fundamental human right. Advancing gender

equality is critical to all areas of a healthy society, from reducing poverty to promoting the

health, education, protection and the well-being of girls and boys. “Research shows that in

general, women receive worse medical care than men. There are many reasons for this, including

lack of education and lower incomes”( Soken-Huberty). As to why women are treated this way I

have no idea why, being male or female doesn’t make you any less of a human being, everyone

in the world needs medical care and it should be provided to them. Gender equality can lead to

peace in the world, the world is so divided when it doesn't have to be at all,we all live in the

same world and go through hard times, why can't we see that we are all equal.
