Although there were signs of rapid developments throughout the ages of the Malay
Civilization, the nobility and royalty has lost their specialities as what was once considered as
their role from the past. This includes the area of literature, writing and intellectuals. Over time,
many figures from Malay origins have analysed the purpose of Islamic elements and the
meaning behind them. It is stated that only one individual can be king, officer or judge where
purification of body, mind and soul is one’s responsibility. In addition, one’s role is to not be
tyrannical, not harsh, not power greedy, not reckless, not hasty and thinks twice before executing
an action. They must also be able to acknowledge others, alive or deceased. This has given a
sense of what leadership should be while providing its potential in adapting to the modern era
where technological advancements play a role. This is one of the most important characteristics
of the Malay Civilization. Furthermore, this could factor into an improvement of human
progression while promoting retaining the legacy of the Malay Civilization. In order to survive as
a civilization, it must have the ability to adjust quickly to the ever-changing times while
multifaceted. The importance of understanding civilizations in the past was to be aware on the
journey towards a better quality of life with contentment. We should not let the old ways of the
civilization be forgotten, let alone its heritage. This is also to differentiate between Malays and
non-Malays instead of allowing unimportant issues to come to mind. Efforts were focused to
bring a political body to properly develop the society of the Malay Civilization. Coordination was
essential and it has brought many people together in order to establish the Malay Civilization
into the modern era of what it is today. Moreover, it is crucial to be educated on what is passed
down to us in order to understand our origins regardless of its apparent weakness in defences
and military advancements. As a result, certain things were lost in the past due to lack of respect
for its foundation after many cases of being seized by foreign powers. Nevertheless, the Malay
Civilization was still able to retain some of its characteristics, hence the sense of liveliness when
traditions are celebrated. Modesty is one of the key factors that the Civilization has attained, and
it was one feature that has influenced many around the world.

Favourable results gained from the old age of the Malay Civilization has brought
prosperity numerous times. However, the value of these discoveries is varied from era to era
and anything that was not attempted could only hinder proper human progression, though hints
of success does not fully reflect the values, features and practices that are essential to the
civilization. Preserved items from the old age of civilization was made possible due to its capacity
to conform to changing times, notwithstanding the many facets of the Malay Civilization being
abandoned in order to advance as a civilization. All in all, it is about learning to adapt and having
the bravery to do so, even in difficult times. This aspect of life is one many must learn in order
to overcome fear and make a leap for a better quality of life. Even more, the Malay Civilization
was able to apply several elements derived from other civilizations in order to make
improvements upon their own creations. This, in turn, provides an open opportunity to achieve
success in future works.

The reach from one civilization to the next has never been more convenient than ever,
exclusion from the outside world is almost impossible. Thus, accomplishments became more
remarkable than the past. However, achievements of the past define the heritage of one
civilization. Without it, there is no identity nor pride to exhibit. Based on the past glories of the
Malay Civilization, one must overcome an obstacle with wisdom and be well organized. Similarly,
the formation of an agreement is crucial in the Malay Civilization. Initially, family lineage was
very important to the civilization. However, due to western influence, the importance on the perks
of being an individual became more attractive. This resulted in the abolishment and adjustment
of some quotes representing wisdom due to ignorance to tradition. Rather, it should be viewed
as regulations set on the civilization. Over time, these regulations have been altered to suit the
needs of the society through fair agreements as opposed to confrontations.

The concept of western democratic leadership is not acknowledged by the Malay

Civilization as they preferred the idea of management. Within the function of a leadership, an
individual will take the role of the leader and uphold the responsibility of the task at hand. This
is the way of western democracy as there are no customs of passing down leadership titles. This
has given several difficulties to the Malay society’s concept of leadership; whether a leader
should act without a body in order for greatness to be accomplished. Likewise, there were two
other problems the civilization had to face: trade and the principal development of science and
technology. For trade, business exchanges were only carried out between the Malays before
colonisation. Rule and regulations were then imposed after colonisation which had the
indigenous people retreated from court business into farming valley. Doing business required
the communication of speaking in the Malay language as it was considered to be the common
tongue of the people. In order for steady economic progression to be made, the soul and
practicality of business practices must be attained as it was the core of the Malay Civilization.
The other challenge the Malay Civilization had to face was how science and technology can be
fully utilised as its principal growth. Learning the foundation of science and technology takes a
long period of time and requires children to be nurtured from young so that knowledge can be
passed on. Hence, more discoveries and inventions will be produced, advancing human
progression and most importantly, the Malay Civilization. As time went on, technology and
scientific theories evolved as well. With each scientific breakthrough, the civilization thrived in
economy with possibly more job opportunities. Also, it has experienced major improvements in
lifestyle. The Malay Civilization shared the same technological improvements along with the
Islamic Civilization. Advancements in fields include agriculture, medicine, astrology, weaponry,
architecture and trade. The discoveries in science and technology already peaked in the Malay
Civilization before the Middle Ages.
Other than that, the Malay Civilization has revolutionized its way of utilising the Malay
language by the means of a new system of Jawi writing which introduces a new ideology and
expands knowledge in philosophy. This allowed Malay literature to revolve around Islamic
literature where there are teachings of law, religion and historical figures. Furthermore, this
allowed them to acquire new understanding in connection to Islamic studies and human relations.
In spite of colonisation, customs of Malay Muslims continued to spread throughout other areas
including Perak, Brunei, Kelantan, etc.

The legacy that has been recorded was done through the preservation of identity with the
usage of the Malay language. This links to the traditions, religious beliefs, maritime practices of
the civilization. Changing times require the ethnicity to adapt to the circumstances at hand, as
long as the principal establishment is not contradicted. On the other hand, one of the cultures
the Malay Civilization has adopted was the maritime culture which was focused to traders’
community at the watershed which originated from the Sriwijaya. This defined the centre of
Malay Civilization as a potential trade route by sea. Moreover, there were also inspirations from
feudal-agrarian culture which was the form of Hindu-Buddhist atmosphere. This introduced rice
irrigation for agriculture under the command of the king. Also, there was the social hierarchy
system where status is distinguished. This has influenced the social and complex power systems
in the society of Philippines. One of the common traits shared on the political way of life was the
authority of the king to the people. Everyone’s role and meaning of life was dictated by the king.
In the old age of Malay Civilization, people were seen as followers of the king. However, a
kingdom would only reign supreme if the loyalty of the followers is maintained. Only wickedness
of the royalty would bring down the authority of the king and the kingdom itself. Thence, it is
crucial for the relations between the king and his people to be in good terms. To maintain at this
state requires the judgement of the king to be fair and just. Or else, immorality and ignorance to
the situation would only bring human conflicts and disasters to the kingdom. Ancient Malay
Sumatra in connection to shutter cosmology and ancient wangca ideology made advancements
to the civilization become more important. Therefore, its outside presence is not widely known.
From the 13th century to the 19th century, as the Malay Civilization went through a transition from
classical era to modern era, infrastructure became more innovative throughout Southeast Asia.
Thus, making the Malay kingdom more colourful as time went on.

During the imperialism era when colonisation was thriving, the Dutch set up their business
organisation through trade and had made a huge influence on the people despite its
malevolence against Islam. After a few centuries with many conflicts, the Dutch disposed the
political power of Islam and managed to control the Netherlands Indies, Batavia. However, this
strengthened the Malay cultural identity that has been patterned Islam as studies showed them
that the strong will eventually fall, like dust before the wind. Thus, this brought new ideology into
the Malay culture, believing that colonisation does not mean the end of the Malay heritage.
Regardless, the ideals of Malay Islam cannot be achieved if the organisations such as Galtung,
Johan and Inayatullah are not united. Islam as a religion consists of two institutions; the
normative and adherents of subjective experience in lifestyle and conditions of political stream.
Politics derived from Dutch colonisation had attempted to supress Islam which caused their fall
in Indonesia during the liberation. With many supporters of Malay culture, they were able to
integrate Islam and resist against Dutch colonial powers.

In terms of globalization, electronic communication, global trade and utilisation of imaging

plays a big role. Intensity of globalization is increased over time as more advancements are
made towards communications and information technology. Although it has brought progress to
human civilization, injustice is brought upon developing countries while developed countries
prospered. To summarise, globalization produces polarization, concentration of wealth and
marginalization which coexists in the same operation. In contemporary Malay civilization, most
of Islam is merged from the influence of globalization. This has caused many vocal conflicts
within global civilization especially those reside in the West. Intuition and antagonism of Islam
were raised by the West and those in developing countries which threatened their ideology and
policies. Political theses have been made, pointing out that as long as self-interests are aligned,
conflicts between the West and Islam would happen no matter the amount of criticisms received.
Despite numerous resistances against the West, the western world has heavily influenced the
world of Malay and Malay Islamic world as they feature an expertise in the economy system.
Although western business groups have succeeded in gaining deals with local Malay
organizations, they faced many disaffections from natives of the land. Over time, globalization
has caused Islam to lose its meaning and the threat to its existence has been highlighted as
studies must bring a meaningful understanding.

Finally, the Malay Civilization has provided a cultural response to alterations in global
civilization which was to advance the progression of other civilizations by educating them on
other cultures. A wisdom derived from the Arabs taught Muslims that participation in science
with flourishing civilizations is very important. This would give them the opportunity to learn and
advance further in understanding of the world, despite its shortcomings due to lack of experience,
weak leadership and low morale of the Malay Civilization.
