A 19 year young RPG developer
Liam Allan is a 19 year young RPG developer.
He's been working with the IBM i platform since
2014 (when he was 17) and mainly focuses on
RPG with his career. But he loves to dabble in
anything ILE + PASE and, among other things, he
creates development tools in his "spare" time. His
passion is to bring IBM i and the world of open-
source closer together.

Thomas Barlen is an IBM Certified Consulting IT
Specialist in Germany working for the IBM
Systems Lab Services & Training team. In his 32

years with IBM he has held various technical
positions. He has over 25 years of experience in
IBM i (initially known as AS/400) networking and
security. Since 2008 Thomas expanded his work
area also into the AIX security field. He is a
frequent speaker at international technical
conferences. Currently, Thomas focuses on
designing and implementing cross-platform
single sign-on solutions and helps customers
around Europe with security compliance projects
in the IBM i and AIX environment.

Abstract:
Compliance regulations are forcing companies to check and
tighten security in their IBM i business application environments.
Numerous security assessments that IBM Systems Lab Services
consultants have conducted over the years have shown that some
problem areas pop up in almost every account. One example are
excessive object permissions where public authorities are set way
too high and nobody is changing anything because they are afraid
of breaking the application. On the other hand you read often
about security vulnerabilities in networking protocols and services.
IBM i 7.3 has introduced some major changes in system defaults
that disable weak security protocols. However, these changes can
also affect you.
By joining this session, you will get an introduction of all important
security enhancements. In addition, you will get demos of many of
the features so that you get an impression of how they work.

In today’s competitive business environment it is more necessary
than ever to effectively deliver technology in a way that makes the

a) COMMON Business Computing Associate (CBCA)

that COMMON attests to your professional competence, and to the
knowledge and skills represented by defined tasks in the exam. As

b) COMMON Certified Business Computing Professional (CCBCP) -
If you have worked in the Business Computing field for at least five

achieved a high level of technical knowledge. If you want to
confirm the proficiency of your IT knowledge, skills, and practices
in a business environment, and would like to advance your career,
achieving CCBCP will give you a significant edge over your peers.
c) COMMON Certified Application Developer ILE RPG
ILE RPG adds a technical certification to the program, as demanded
by the members of the COMMON community. This certification
validates your RPG skills and expertise that a modern-day RPG
programmer should possess by testing your knowledge and
experience in four major topic areas.
d) COMMON Certified Associate RPG Developer
The Associate RPG Developer exam is meant for those with at least
six months of experience coding, or maintaining a variety of
applications, using RPG IV and ILE. The candidate will a basic
knowledge of RPG, and some of the topics covered in the exam
include: Basics of RPG programming, creating and using files, using
declarations, program workflow, using functions, processing
character data, working with dates, processing and updating
database files, using SQL, using arrays and tables, handling errors,
programming with subfiles and working with APIs.

requiring support. We will discuss the types of software lifecycles
all needing different testing. Specifically covered are the
development types V-model, Waterfall model, and Iterative model.

DB2 for i has made great strides in providing IBM i Services to
access IBM i operating system detail. Those services are used by
System administrators and application developers.
A lesser known fact is that a great many DB2 for i Services exist to
help Database Engineers (DBEs) and Database Administrators
(DBAs) improve their productivity.
This session will address some of the most important tasks for a
DBE on DB2 for i and show how SQL and DB2 for i Services can be
used to streamline, automate and improve mission critical tasks.

hear about the many database and SQL enhancements for

most database enhancements, they're built into DB2 for i, meaning
that if you upgrade, your team will have a short distance to travel

We identify the cybercrime threats for SME’s (Small and Medium
Sized Enterprises), and we consider the relevant security solutions
with low budget and resource needs. SME’s typically lack
awareness of the threats, but the approaches used by security

law, the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), causes an
additional “sense of urgency” to satisfy the SME market needs.

Jesse Gorzinski, MBA
Team Lead - IBM i Emerging Solutions, US
Jesse Gorzinski works for the IBM i development
lab in Rochester, MN. He is the team leader of
the IBM i Emerging Solutions Team, which is
responsible for strategic deliverables in the

realms of open source, system
management/access, and DB2 tooling. Jesse, who
was doing RPG programming at the age of 18, is
an expert on application development on IBM i,
as well as system access and modernization.
His hobbies include playing with his dog,
replacing complex applications with 5-line
Python programs, and advocating for the use of
new technologies on IBM i!
Prior to his 2006 employment at IBM, Jesse
worked with the AS/400 as an I/T administrator
for an IBM customer in the finance/mortgage
industry, where he specialized in data
backup/recovery, process optimization, and
information integrity. He has a Bachelor's degree
in Computer Science as well as a Master of
Business Administration degree.

Abstract:
SQL becomes more and more the standard not only for accessing
data, but also for creating and maintaining database objects. Even
though the creation and alter commands can be executed from
Birgitta HAUSER any interface that supports SQL, it may be difficult to construct or
enter those statements directly. System i/ IBM i Navigator
Database is the strategic interface for creating, managing and
modifying all kinds of database objects, such as tables, views and
indexes, but also stored procedures, triggers and user defined
(table) functions.
When accessing data with SQL, the good news is, data is always
found. Sometimes however, the query seems to run forever and
long running queries are a nuisance. In this way it must be possible
to detect long running queries and tune them. The System i/IBM i
Navigator provides multiple interfaces for monitoring and
recording information SQL activities and finally for analyzing the
condensed data, such as Index Advisor, Index Condenser, Visual
Explain, SQL Plan Cache (Snapshots) and SQL Performance

IBM i Navigator is enhanced to support the most recent SQL
enhancements.
Learning Objectives: The IBM i Navigator Database interface is the
easiest way for creating and maintaining database objects. It also
includes powerful interfaces for analyzing and tuning your queries.
In this session you will get an introduction into System i/IBM i
Navigator. You will learn how to create and modify database
objects and how to find related database objects, such as
constraints and triggers. You will learn how to retrieve and store
and finally (re-)execute the SQL code for (re-)creating any
database object.
You’ll get an introduction into the different interfaces for analyzing
your SQL activities, such as Visual Explain, SQE Plan Cache and SQL
Performance Monitors. You’ll learn how to detect long running
queries, how to analyze them. Because providing the right indexes
is the key for a good SQL performance you’ll also get an
introduction into the Index Advisor, Index Evaluator and Index
Condenser Interfaces.

Abstract:
Finally! The time where RPG was a cryptic, column oriented, hard
to decode programming language is over. Beginning with release
V5R1M0 free format coding for C-Specs was introduced … but it
took until release 7.1 TR 8 (respectively release 7.2) until the H, F, D
and P-Specs got a free format equivalent. The complete free
format coding includes several simplifications and/or assumptions,
for example if not explicitly defined differently a file (F-Spec) is
handled as input file. Instead of single characters that had to be
coded on a specific position, descriptive keywords are introduced,
for examples specific keywords exist for all data types. The

release 7.2 TR 3 the last restriction (RPG source code has to be
coded between position 8 and 80) is removed.
Learning Objectives: In this session you will learn how to code free-
format H-, F-, D- and P-Specs beginning with the new DCL-
Opcodes, continued with the new keywords for defining data types
in stand-alone fields or data structure sub-fields. This session will
cover the file definition for keyed or non-keyed access in input and
update mode. You’ll also learn how to define all kinds of work
fields, constants, arrays, (nested) data structures etc. The coding of
(sub-) procedures, prototypes and procedure interfaces are
demonstrated as well as the coding of special data structures, such
as program status data structure and data areas.

Ludwig Van den bergh started his career in IBM
in 1982 as a Systems Engineer in VM/VSE
mainframe environments. One of his biggest
projects was a Systems Integration, merging 50 IT
shops. He lead the team for HW architecture and
implementation - a full time contract of 30
months. In 1990, at the advent of the RS/6000, he
started supporting RS/6000 customers. In 1994,
He followed SAP education to become an SAP
Basic Consultant and worked 9 months as a
project manager to start up SAP at a big steel
concern. He then became manager for BeLux of
the RS/6000 team and after different mergers of
the HW brands within IBM, he was in the late 90’s
pre-sales manager for all HW brands in BeLux.
In 2003, Ludwig was selected to pilot in region
West as manager, the Systems Architect job.

Abstract:
Java has been among the most popular programming languages
for quite a while now. It's versatile, general-purpose language that
is being used for building all kinds of applications: mobile, server-
side, webapp, ... and it has one of the largest ecosystems of
available libraries.
For an RPG developer however, the world of Java is also full of
novel concepts and terminology: objects, bytecode, JVM, methods,
... And also looking at the source code, everything looks entirely
different: there are dozens of small source files, organized in many
different directories. And it's not only Java source files: there are
XML descriptors, property files, POM files, ... there as well.
In this workshop, you will get a first introduction to the world of
Java by looking at a few small projects, investigating how code
works and how everything is organized.
