Parker RunWise®

Advanced Series Hybrid Drive

Advanced Technology for Fuel Reduction

In 2005, Parker developed RunWise®, the first ever Advanced Series

Hybrid Drive System. It replaces the conventional transmission with a
hydraulic transmission to drive the truck off mechanical and hydraulic
power. RunWise hit the market by storm in 2010, reducing fuel
consumption up to an unheard of 50%! The system offers brake
energy recovery, allowing the truck to extend brake replacements.

Parker Hannifin innovation

revolutionizes the work truck market with an
Advanced Hybrid Drive System that reuses
as much as 71 % of braking energy for
acceleration. The system manages the engine
Reduced Fuel Consumption
to operate at peak efficiency by optimizing On average, a RunWise vehicle saves up to
performance at both low and high speeds. 4,300 gallons of fuel per year. That equals 860
5-gallon cans!

Based on Parker technology

developed and tested since early 1980’s,
this Advanced Series Hybrid Drive System is
achieving unprecedented levels of fuel
efficiency for fleet owners.

The technology is inherently green,

braking energy is harnessed instead of wasted,
and CO2 emissions are reduced at dramatic
levels because fuel use is cut by as much as half.

2
How RunWise Works Engine

When the truck is started the engine and

primary bent axis pump/motor charge the
high pressure accumulators.

As the driver presses on the throttle the

truck’s stored energy is used to drive the Low Pressure
truck hydraulically. Once that energy is used Reservoir
up, then engine supplies the power.
Power Drive Unit
Each time the driver presses the brakes, the (3-Speed Box)
system captures energy into the high pressure

accumulators. Therefore, the more stops the Pump/Motor
High Pressure
more saved energy!
Accumulator
When the truck drives over speeds of
45 mph the driveshaft connects directly N2
with the engine to drive the truck in
mechanical mode.

Note: RunWise replaces the conventional transmission.

Major Components of RunWise

RunWise is a Completely Integrated System

Electronic Control
Modules (ECM)
Parker’s unique Electronic Control
Module interfaces with the engine
and controls the hydraulic transmis-
sion to optimize engine efficiency,
reduce fuel consumption, and
improve driveability.

High Pressure
Accumulators
A high pressure accumulator stores
braking energy by compressing
nitrogen gas using hydraulic fluid.
It allows RunWise to capture and
reuse up to 71% of braking energy
otherwise lost during braking.

4
Power Drive Unit
(3-Speed Box)
Parker’s innovative patented design
keeps the engine operating at peak
efficiency. Two hydraulic modes are
used to drive the truck up to 45 mph.
A third, mechanical mode is used at
higher speeds for maximum efficiency.

Bent Axis
Pump/Motor
Each of the pump/motors are rated
at 335 horsepower. They can act as
pumps; pushing fluid into the high
pressure accumulators while slowing
down the vehicle. They can also act
as motors; consuming fluid from the
high pressure accumulator while
accelerating the vehicle.

Reliability
RunWise is brought to you by Parker Hannifin, the
world’s leading diversified manufacturer of motion
and control technologies and systems with nearly
100 years of experience. Parker provides solutions
to customers that are reliable, proven and trusted.

Advantages

Brake Savings
An advanced series hydraulic hybrid offers
remarkable brake savings*. The pump/motors
slow down the truck when the brakes are 51.6° F
engaged, causing brake life to increase RunWise Refuse Truck Difference Conventional Refuse Truck
exponentially. Often extending replacements
to one to two times during the life based on
duty cycle. Imagine the money and time you
save by preforming fewer brake jobs during
the life of your truck.

*Based on the national average refuse truck life of 10 years.

Parker’s RunWise reduces the heat friction on the brakes due to the
pump/motors slowing down the truck and conserving brake life.

Fuel Savings
RunWise saves fuel two ways. First, by decoupling the engine from the wheels at speeds under 45 mph, this allows the
engine to operate at its peak efficiency. Second, by recovering brake energy thus reducing the total fuel consumption of
the vehicle. Combined, these features reduce fuel consumption up to 35-50%. On average, a refuse truck burns 8,600
gallons of diesel per year. You can imagine the savings RunWise can make on your bottom dollar!

Productivity
Envision increasing the productivity in your fleet; adding more houses to a route, reducing overtime, increasing capital gain.
All this can be possible by implementing RunWise system into your fleet. RunWise has minimal lag time, between pressing
on the throttle and propelling forward. Unlike a traditional transmission, RunWise offers instant torque. A driver can enjoy
quick launches and smooth braking from container to container. RunWise can increase your productivity up to 15%.
