So, the flow here is that a particle is starting from rest and has to travel a distance.

The path it is going to travel is not a free space, the space has electric field due to
two disks being kept parallel to each other..So, by theory we know that electric field
will exert a force too on a charged particle ( given by F=qE) , this force will thus give
it acceleration (or deacceleration) (a= F/m) and so this particle which we are
sending across would be facing some acceleration/deacceleration in it’s journey.
Now, here itself, let’s clear if the particle is accelerated or deaccelerated. So,
applying the theory we read in electromagnetism. Electric field lines are from
positive terminal to negative terminal (since electric field line are away from positive
charge and onto the negative)..Our proton is travelling from negative disk to
positive disk. Soo, it is moving “against” the direction of electric field. Thus, electric
field lines are essentially deaccelerating the proton. Since it has to move opposite to
direction of electric field line. Thus, final situation we get is, we need to give the
proton a speed when thrwoing from negative disk, it will travel between the
plates ,where the field line will try to slow it down ( negative
acceleration/deacceleration) , task is it should reach the positive disk.

So, if we see we need to find te speed at which we launch thr proton so that it
“barely” reaches positive disk. So, this means our final speed..the speed at which
proton reaches should become zero. That means it would be just enough to reach
there. If we give lesser than that speed, field lines might make it not reach the
positive disk (because remember field lines are in opposite direction of the
movement and hence deaccelerating)

As you writly said it involves speed, acceleration, distances..so equation of motion

seem to be a natural choice.

Question is which one? The answer is pretty simple, we would use all for which we
motion we have enough data. Make relations between variables and use them to
solve the values.

So, we want to know the “initial speed” (at which we would be throwing proton)
final speed is zero (barely reachese the destination) and we know the distance
between the destination.

If you look this gives us the best choice of equation as :

V2 = U2 – 2aD . Where V is final speed U is initial speed , a is acceleration and D is
distance between plates (which our particle travels). Now, here I have used -2aD
instaead of usual +2aD,since we discussed that acceleration here is in opposite
direction ( since electric field are in opposite direction and thus force is in opposite
direction)

Now, final speed is zero, so V= 0, U is something we need to find as answer to the

question, D is directly given to us. ..So,
U2= 2aD.
If we somehow get to know the value of “a” We can put a and D and get to know the
throwing speed.

For solving acceleration:

We can get acceleration from force, Force on particle is F= qE, where q is charge on
particle and E is electric field intensity and then Acceleration a, = qE/m

Value of q for proton is : 1.6 * 10-19 C and mass of proton is = 1.67*10-27 kg

Now, the only thing we need is E.

Calculation for E: (This is standard calculation, you can directly use the result, steps
are for your understanding ,in case you are not aware of method to get E)

NEXT PAGE
Coming back, we can put q, m and E, to get the value of acceleration a:

a = qE/m

a= [( 1.6 * 10-19 C) * (3.597 *106)]/ (1.67*10-27 )

a= 3.446*1014 m/s2

Now, that, we have a..we can easily put it in our equation 1:

U2= 2aD

To get U = Square root ( 2 *3.446*1014 * 2*10-2)

[note: we need correct unit, distance is 2 cm, so, we write it in metre as 2*10-2 since
we have everything else in Standard metre units]

U = 8.3 *105 m/s
