Ta use a uerb with a subjecl in a sentence. you haue lo change the form
ofthat uerb (conjugate) . in many cases. you Iake the -en ending off the
infiniliue. leauing the stem of the uerb. then add the appropriate ending

The stem of heißen is heiß-. lf you want to say "/ am called." you add

heißen:
Sing ular

Separa ble verbs : abreisen, ausfüllen
Did you notice that Tm leauing" is ich reise ab. but the infinitiue "to leaue" is
abreisen 7 Similarly "I fill out (a form)" is ich fülle (ein Formular) aus, but the
infinitiue "to fill out" is ausfüllen. These are separable uerbs: they consist of a
normal uerb and a preposition. ln the infinitiue form. the preposition is prefixed to
the uerb. but when the uerb is used with a subject. the preposition goes to the end
of the sentence:
All separable uerbs are marked by + between prefix and uerb in the Ward Bank.

Compound nouns: gender
As you 'l/ haue noticed. German has some uery lang words' Howeuer.
these are usual/y just two or more words written tagether (compounds) .
Jf you can recogn ize the components. grasping the meaning of the
compound isn't usually a problem. For example:
the flowe rs + the shop = the flower shop (literal/y: the 'flowers shop ')
Compound nouns like Blumenladen take the gender of the last
component: it's die Blume but der Laden . so it's der Blumenladen.
Jf you address someone formally, in Geman you literal/y say "Go }'QY.
straight ahead." not just "Go straight ahead." like English.
