Pre-flection: For my course topic, I would like to learn about the Juvenile Justice system.

This
topic interests me because it’s a whole different system that believes that juveniles can be
rehabilitated. The experience I have with this topic is I know a family member who has been in a
juvenile justice rehabilitation program. How this course topic relates to my career is it can help
me understand more about the juvenile justice system and look at it from a different perspective.
It can teach me, how I can help a juvenile when he/she is in trouble with the law. What interests
me is how the juvenile justice system operates and the rehabilitation behind it. I believe that the
system works, and the programs have an effect on children. My fears for this online experience
are I will fall behind on assignments and I will not fully understand the course. But my hope is,
that the professor will have that special connection with the class.
Finale Summary: The most interesting and frustrating thing I learned in Criminal justice 1010
was about Juvenile Justice. The thing that surprised me the most about the topic was how the
juvenile system operates and the rehabilitation behind it. The juvenile justice system is seen
more as a rehabilitative model for young adults. Juveniles and adults are treated differently in
rehab, this is due to the maturity level and comprehending to what is happening. But my question
is when children commit crimes, should rehabilitation take precedence over punishment? I
believe it should. Everyone makes mistakes and to fix those mistakes we need support from
others. Everyone deserves a second chance in life and if we help children now it is most likely
they will not commit a crime in the future. I do not think throwing them in a cell will help them
later in their lives if anything they will remain corrupt. I don’t believe throwing people into cells
and giving them a certain number of years in that cell will help them. If society doesn’t treat
them as humans, they will believe that they aren’t. But when you communicate with one another
they will start to see the world as more supportive and understanding. I think it's important for
others to understand the juvenile justice system. I believe it is good to be aware of the
importance of rehabilitation. I will apply this knowledge by spreading more awareness about
rehabilitation and its effectiveness on young adults. What I would like to learn is why don’t adult
prisoners get rehabilitation? The difficult challenges I think would be if there will be any effect
to the rehabilitation. My career options have deferentially expanded after taking this course, I
have been looking into law enforcement. How society can better address the problem is to create
a better system by acknowledging the current issue(s). To see that their current system isn’t
working, to acknowledge the effectiveness of a new system. My next process is to do more
research on my question and find more information on why there is a struggle in getting adult
prisoners’ access to rehabilitation.
Reflection: This whole school year has been weird. Everything has been online from, lectures,
discussions, and exams. So, to have an in-person class was pretty awesome, I enjoyed going to
class because it was something new and I looked forward to it. To actually be in a classroom full
of people and have real discussions also, to have one on one lectures with the professor. All these
small things made it seem as if the world was back to being normal again. I enjoyed every
lecture that was taught, I found all of them engaging. But what made this class different from the
others, was the professor. I liked how he would tell us his stories about being an undercover
agent. They sounded like the movies I watched, and I found that awesome. His experience
sounded dangerous but worth every single risk. It’s not every day that your professor is an
undercover agent. Another thing I found fascinating from his lectures where he would tell us side
facts. For example, we had a discussion on school shootings, and he brought up the 1999
columbine shooting. He mentions that before the shooting, Dylan and Eric set a car on fire about
2 miles away from the school to distract law enforcement. That is something I did not know and
found interesting. But one of the things I find most fascinating about Professor Renckert is that
he interviews criminals and serial killers. People like murders, psychopaths, and monsters
society sees as inhuman. It makes me wonder how it must feel to be face to face with a person
who has slaughtered multiple people with their own hands. But my experience was great! I
learned more than I expected. With the help of the textbook, discussions, and quizzes I was
intrigued by all the information I was given. I got more for what I was looking for. I believe this
course did motivate me to do something different and that was to wake up early and get work
done before the sunrise. To get all the important work and out of the way, made my day easier. I
plan to use this technique for the rest of my life. I don’t think I would improve this course, in my
opinion, I believe it's great the way it is.
