Have you ever wondered about the differences and similarities of self-efficacy and self-esteem?

They are two terms that we have probably heard in the course of our lifetime. It is important to
know their definitions and how they differ and relate to one another because it will help us in
understanding ourselves better. They are key concepts for understanding the self. First of all,
Self-Efficacy is one's capability to be instrumental or useful to his/her environment. It is
evaluated coming from our inner selves that truly believes that we can reach and achieve our
dreams and goals. It is how you feel your about own capabilities to do an action successfully or
accomplish it and your strengths. This is developed early on especially by our parents. On the
other hand, Self-esteem is the process of basically examining and judging oneself based on the
perspective of other people. It can be influenced by the people around us, for example our
friends, relatives, teachers, and etc. This is all about knowing one’s worth and having self-
respect. It is a matter of viewing yourself through the eyes of other people. They are similarly
influenced by outside forces as both can be developed by the people around us. The environment
a person grows up in or is surrounded by drastically affects the levels of both variables. Self-
efficacy majorly comes from within unlike self-esteem that is mostly built from the way people
see us. Developing self-efficacy often leads into generally positive outcomes. Likewise,
maintaining good self-esteem can build much more confidence that is also linked with the other
variable. All in all, they are both evaluations that leads to further self-development and have
great impacts on how we turn out as person. It is important to acknowledge them to achieve self-
awareness as well.
