Topic 14: Communication on the Internet

Describe the given topic according to the following questions:

1. Describe the role of forums in communication.
2. How can you connect to a web forum, how to register, how to start a new topic and
how to comment to an existing one?
3. Define the concepts of topic and moderation.
4. What are the most important features of online chat? What kind of services do you use
or do you know of? What are the advantages and disadvantages? Compare their
features.
5. What is an online database? List three online databases and present their major
features.

1., An Internet forum, or message board, is an online discussion site where people can hold
conversations in the form of posted messages. They differ from chat rooms in that messages are
often longer than one line of text, and are at least temporarily archived.

2., Once you have found a forum you want to join, click the link from the search results to be directed
to the forum’s site. To begin the registration process click the “Register” button somewhere on the
forum board’s home page. The first thing you will see upon clicking the “Register” button is a Terms
of Use page, which details the rules and regulations, as well as the rights, of the forum. Just click
“Agree to the terms,” to begin registering. Most forums will have a typical registration form, with
fields that you need to fill in with information like your e-mail address, name, date of birth, language,
username, and password. Fill in all the required fields, and press “Submit.” Probably you will receive
a verification email in order to confirm your registration.
You can easily create a new forum topic as well. First, you have to choose a Forum group that relates
to your post. Inside the forum group you will see a “New Topic” button, you have to click on. Finally
add a subject and some content. You can add photos too.
Commenting to a Forum topic is pretty easy. All you'd have to do is to log in to your account, or
create one, and head to the forum topic that you'd like to comment on. Click the 'Reply to this topic'
button to submit your response to the thread.

3. Communication is the act of transferring information from one place, person or group to another.
Every communication involves (at least) one sender, a receiver and channel of communication. The
transmission of the message from sender to recipient can be affected by a huge range of
things. These include our emotions, the cultural situation, the medium used to communicate,
and even our location.
Content moderation is when an online platform screen and monitor user-generated content based
on platform-specific rules and guidelines to determine if the content should be published on the
online platform, or not. On Internet websites that invite users to post comments, a moderation
system is the method the webmaster chooses to sort contributions that are irrelevant, obscene,
illegal, or insulting with regards to useful or informative contributions.

4., There are a huge number of options out there for online chats, each with different functions and
individual features. There are certain features that all chats need to have in order to both provide the
best customer service possible and evaluate its performance. For instance these platforms send
messages over Wi-Fi and mobile data, instead of SMS or MMS. They let you know when people are
typing or if you’ve read their messages. Customisable design is essential for a userfriendly platform.
It’s also important for a chat platform to have a online version for browsers and also an application
for mobile devices. Online chat platforms can deal with more than one client at a time and they
enable you to send high-quality photos.
Some of the most popular chat services are: WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, WeChat, Viber,
Telegram, iMessage etc. WhatsApp is the most preferred messenger app in the World today. With
end-to-end encryption, WhatsApp is a very secure chat platform that is favored by people in
countries where security may be a major concern. Facebook Messenger (and chatbots in particular)
provide a unique opportunity to acquire customers, nurture leads, segment audiences and deliver
highly relevant, targeted content. Fairly popular due to its encryption and secret chat feature, Viber
is often installed in phones as a secondary app.
5. The definition of an online database is a computer application that is delivered from the Internet
that stores and organizes data to make it accessible to the user.
 Centralised Database
The information(data) is stored at a centralized location and the users from different
locations can access this data. This type of database contains application procedures
that help the users to access the data even from a remote location.

 Distributed Databases
Just opposite of the centralized database concept, the distributed database has
contributions from the common database as well as the information captured by local
computers also. The data is not at one place and is distributed at various sites of an
organization. These sites are connected to each other with the help of communication
links which helps them to access the distributed data easily.
 NoSQL Database
These are used for large sets of distributed data. There are some big data performance
issues which are effectively handled by relational databases, such kind of issues are
easily managed by NoSQL databases. There are very efficient in analyzing large size
unstructured data that may be stored at multiple virtual servers of the cloud.
