MODULE #: 4 ASSESSMENT #: 1,3,4 and 5

1. Are all your encounters with art rewarding? Why or why not?

- Yes. Art is the way of seeing the world—a way of expression. As a person who loves
to act and write, I can really foretell that my experiences towards art add value to my
life. The joy I am experiencing every time I act in front of the people, whenever I read
books and add it to my collection and even writing poems about what I feel about that
day is very much fulfilling. I tend to express myself through arts and the sheer of joy and
happiness reflects not just in physical but it also mirrors my soul. The experience is
priceless.

3. Advocates of the instrumental values of the arts are criticized for pushing that
which is not the primary goal of art – as means to economic end, for instance.
How would you justify this stance of the instrumentalists?

- The communicative power of art creates ties among people in the community in
various ways. As a democratic country, we need citizens who can think for themselves
rather than deferring to authority, and, according to Nussbaum, they need citizens with
ability Experiences of the arts, according to many of these commentators, help build
those ties. Well actually, art is not a detriment means to economic ends; in fact, it helps
the community. The arts, for example, provide the means for communally expressing
personal emotion. It is used to express religious sentiments, and to capture both
religious and secular narratives valued by the community. The arts, according to Ellen
Dissanayake, are “containers for, molders of feeling” that allow private feelings to be
jointly expressed and reinforce the sense that we are not alone. Art introduces new
voices into the community, voices that can redefine the fabric of the culture. The rise of
contemporary fiction by and about women is an example of new voices helping to
redefine cultures and reshaped the societal view. On a smaller scale, arts festivals and
national conferences can give voice to particular communities. Some individual works of
art were created with the explicit purpose of changing attitudes and bringing about
social change

On the other hand, art is really significant upon boosting the economic state of the
country. For example, as stated in the module; there are three principal categories of
economic benefits: First, direct benefits, it includes those that result from the arts as an
economic activity and thus are a source of employment, tax revenue, and spending.
Indirect benefit wherein the attraction of individuals and firms to locations where the
arts are available, it gave rise to promote tourist destination in our country that will really
help for economic growth. Lastly, a variety of “public-good” benefits for example,
how arts can be a legacy. Wherein the availability of the arts, the ability to have the arts
available for the next generation, and the contribution the arts make to a community’s
quality of life.

4. It is said that repeated exposure to the arts is necessary in order to reap its
benefits. Given that our communities lack the capacity to provide residents
opportunities for art exposure, what concrete steps would you take to facilitate
the realization of this type of project?

- Art is beauty and everyone should appreciate it. We can’t deny the fact that even the
most beautiful art don’t have that much exposure compare to the others and that is
because of the lack of capacities to provide residents opportunities for art exposure. As
a student and a citizen of this country, the most important thing to do is to embrace and
appreciate art. We should support our own before supporting international artists, we
should first know who were those local artists in your community and try to reach out
and be curious about their works. We should not settle for what is famous, of what we
always see in the public, draw spaces for local artist and be curious about their
uniqueness. Art is everywhere, the only thing we should do is to open our eyes.
5. If you were to buy an expensive artwork, what 3 criteria would you use to
appraise the artistic quality of the object? Why?

- If I were to buy an expensive artwork, the 3 criteria I would use to appraise the artistic
quality of the object were; The Skill of the Creator, Originality and The durability of the
creation’s reputation.

First, I would definitely use The Skill of the Creator; upon buying an expensive artwork,
we should be wise enough to know if who are those recognized as literary masters. It is
generally expected that art and literature which is widely recognized for exceptional
worth will also embody an exceptional level of technical skill by the creator. Having this
technical skill, it is expected that you’re buying a worth the paid artwork. And in case if
you want to sell it in the near future, the first thing to be asked is “whose artwork is
this?” There, let the price talk.

Second, I chose the Originality of the artwork. I do believe that once you buy an
expensive artwork, we should focus on the qualities, for physicality, behaviour and
thinking in evaluating its artistically creative worth. What makes an art remarkable is
because it is different from the others. And once your art has its own originality, people
tend to appreciate its uniqueness and aesthetic unity of such creation. Given that I’ll be
buying an expensive artwork, why not buy the one having its own identity? Buying such
artwork is not just merely buying the work of the author but also buying its cognitive
ability to think and make this thinking come into reality.

Lastly, I chose the durability of the creation’s reputation. It is important to consider if the
artwork you are buying is worth preserving or abandoned. Buying an artwork is a good
investment. As art has no correlation to the stock market, it means paintings can go up
in value even when the market crashes, making it a good diversification for
an investment portfolio. If word gets out that you have expensive art hanging on your
wall and that is famous up until the present time, then you're likely to be a target for
burglars and even buy it twice that the original price.
