“THE THIRD OF MAY 1808”

BY FRANCISCO DE GOYA

First Glance

At the first glance of the picture/painting my eyes focused on the man who are wearing
white polo and raised his two hands. I gave a lot of time on examining his facial expression and
analysing the scenario that are happening on the painting. The soldiers pointing their guns on the
man wearing white polo also caught my attention on first glance.

Closer Look

Looking closer at the picture/painting I saw the scared and sad facial expression of people
who are around the man who are wearing white polo. I saw their faces begging for hope to not
be killed. I saw people who are in fear hoping that they will last the day without getting hurt. I
felt sad for the people who died and on the ground covered by their own blood. I pity them
because their lives are important as ours. Looking closer and closer I saw the church on the back
of the scenario and I think that’s a big clue on the real meaning of the painting. Looking closer
and give much attention on every detail of the painting gives you many motions to feel like
sadness and from this you can develop the meaning that the people are being massacred or
executed by the soldiers pointing guns on the unarmed people.
