Assignment3
AThis exercise is an exploration of collages and vector lines. The purpose is to understand the general concept of a
lineweight through extraction and abstraction of profile and shadow lines. This is a two part assignment because the
first part will entail a collage of a building of your choice followed by the general concept of the building delivered in a
vector-base output composition.

Part II:
Now that you’ve successfully found the building you’ve created a collage, the next step involves critical thinking on your
part. In this session, we will be examining how vector lines and simple geometry can play a significant role in your com-
position. Lines help illustrate an image or detail drawing as a visual representation. Geometry is just about everywhere
and thing we see, touch, and feel. Lines help evolve a system whole into a complex or simple series of vectors that
emerge into a geometric shape. For the sake of the assignment, we will focus on the triangle and square/rectangle.

1. You will begin to analyze your collage by critically extracting certain qualities of your project through
varies visual systems. These systems may include material, shadows, and details. Note how the
building is composed and how the linear system through a perspective image will begin to create a
new dialogue in your collage.

2. Start a new file in Illustrator at 11x17 in RGB mode.

3. Go to your image file, click, drag and drop the image into your Illustrator file. Once you’ve done this,
position your image so that it fits the 11x17 canvas, click the image and EMBED it, and lock that layer.
Then create a new layer.

4. Create 4 layers only for 4 different colors used (black, dark grey, grey, light grey).

5. You will need to make sure that all of these layers are labeled correctly and that all lines/geometries
used are on their respective layer by color.

6. You will use draw lines will details seems thin or small, profiles, or things that illustrate a construc-
tive system.

7. You will use geometries where it appears that using lines make the overall image dense. Keep your
geometry to a triangle, square, or rectangle. Do not use any circles or other geometric shapes.

8. Please remember to have these four layers above your image. The last layer will be your image.
You will have a total of 6 layers.
a. Text layer
b. Black layer
c. Dark grey layer
d. Grey layer
e. Light grey layer
f. Image layer

9. When using the lines and geometry, be selective where you place these elements. The output
result should look similar to your collage until the next step.

10. Your collage composition will begin to create a new dialogue about the building. How you position
the images will direct your next move when placing the lines/geometry on the canvas. Notice the den-
sity of some part and the sparse results of lines in other areas. Take these lines/geometries and begin
to extrude them in a slight yet delicate manner. Where lines we once bounded by their image can now
emerge beyond their parameter. Geometries should remain in their position to keep a balance of the
two in order.

11. Save the Illustrator file as 03.01_FirstNameInitialLastName_VectorAbstract.ai

12. Then Save file as: 03.01_ FirstNameInitialLastName_VectorAbstract.pdf

13. Close everything down.

14. Open the PDF file you just saved and Print from file. Must be printed and pinned up.

15. Again, this sheet must be at 11x17. Do not go any bigger. Do not allow the linework to overpower
the entire page. Leave a substantial amount of white space on top to bottom.

16. Properly label your assignment with your identification.
