COMMUNICATION
 exchange of information between people by
sending & receiving it through speaking,
writing or by using any other medium.
 CLEAR COMMUNICATION means that
information is conveyed effectively
between people
 To be a successful nurse, excellent
communication skills are required.
 Nurses speak to people of varying
educational, cultural and social backgrounds
& must do so in an effective, caring and a
professional manner, especially when
communicating with the patients and their
families.
PURPOSES OF COMMUNICATION IN
ADMINISTRATION OF DRUGS
1. Convey information/opinion
 Ex. You will inform the client that this pill is
taken for pain relief. You should take this
medicine after the meal.
2. To request information/opinion/behavior
 Ex. Are you allergic to penicillin? Tell me
more about the injury.
3. To give social acknowledgment
 Ex. Greet client “good morning or hello”
THERAPEUTIC INTERACTIONS
- Are purposeful as opposed to social
interaction.
- Social interaction on the other hand,
entertains the participants but in a
professional situation.
- The nurse usually has a clinical objective,
that is why he/she wants to achieve with
communication.
- The nurses therefore decide on the purpose
of interaction before or shortly after it
begins.
FOLLOWING PURPOSES COMMON IN NURSING
 ASSESS A PATIENT
- the nurse wants to know more about the
patient, to identify his/her problems, that is
why conversation is important.
- It is usually structured form of interview.
 INSTRUCT A PATIENT
- patient instruction may vary from an
informal conversation during which few
facts are conveyed to an elaborate
instruction session. Problem solving is very
important & communication is a part of
that.
 GIVE EMOTIONAL SUPPORT
- the presence of an empathetic nurse is one
who can enter into patient’s shoes and
understand the patient’s experience is
immensely supportive of the patient.
- Emotional support alleviates the loneliness
or the experience our client is having during
their hospital stay.
COMMUNICATION TECHNIQUES
1. Make broad opening remarks
- ex. “Please tell me how does it feel a few
hours after taking your medication.”
2. Use open-ended questions
- In this way, what the patient sees is
important, what he/she is intellectually
capable of, and how well oriented she is
that makes it clear.
- Ex. “Tell me more about the effects of your
medication.”
3. Share observations and thoughts
- shows that you are aware of what is
happening to the patient and encourages
him/her to talk about it.
- Ex. “You seem to be upset today.”
4. Give information
- Very important in the administration of
medication.
- Giving information explains the
 pharmacodynamics or the
pharmacokinetics of drugs. With that, you
will gain the cooperation of the client.
- Ex. “This pill will help calm you down.”
5. Sequencing
- this helps the patient to see the connection
between bars of an occurrence.
- Ex. “Did you experience this dizziness
before or after taking the pill?”
6. Comparison
- using comparison to concrete objects is very
important that is for us to obtain
information from our client.
- Ex. “Does the pain feel like a sharp or a
blunt object that hits you?”
o We live at a time when consumers and
patients want to know more about the food
they consume or the drugs they are take.
o Their appetite for information is growing,
yet the nation is also facing a
communication gap that has serious
implications for the public health.
o This gap extends from what patients want
to know about their medicines to what they
actually learned from their physicians and
from their pharmacists or even nurses.
NEW TECHNOLOGIES RELATED TO DRUG
ADMINISTRATION
1. SMART INHALERS
- These smart inhalers help asthma sufferers
to better manage their condition.
- Bluetooth enable smart inhalers have been
developed.
- A small device is attached to the inhaler w/c
records the date & time of each dose &
whether it was correctly administered.
- These data are then sent to the patients’
smartphones so that they can keep track of
& control of their condition.
- Clinical trials show that using the smart
inhaler device use less reliever medicine &
had more reliever-free days.
2. PRECISION MEDICINE
- This precision medicine allows physician to
select medicines & therapies to treat
diseases such as cancer based on
individual’s genetic make-up.
- This personalized medicine attack tumors
based on the patient’s specific genes &
proteins causing gene mutation & making it
more easily destroyed by the cancer meds.
- It uses a similar mechanism of attacking the
diseases’ vulnerable genes to weaken it &
reduce symptoms & joint damage.
3. VIRTUAL REALITY
- Virtual reality has been around for some
time however, recently with medical &
technological advances, the virtual devices
will also be used as a great aid for patients
helping w/ their diagnosis, treatment plans
& to help prepare them for procedures.
- This is very helpful nowadays especially that
we are experiencing this pandemic.
4. TELEHEALTH
- With oversubscribed services, telehealth
gives patients different access to healthcare
where & when they need it.
- It is particularly useful for patients
managing chronic conditions as it provides
them with consistent, convenient & cost-
effective care.
5. HEALTH WEARABLES
- It was in late 2018 when Apple made
headlines with their groundbreaking Apple
series four watch.
- This has an integrated ECG to monitor the
wearer’s heart rhythms & within days of its
release, customers were waving about the
life-saving technology w/c is able to detect
potentially dangerous heart conditions
