III. Thoughts and Realizations (Significance of Baptism and to the baptized

individual)

For the human, baptism is necessary and highly important because it indicates that the
person (or the parents of the person for infant baptism) wants to follow the example given
by Jesus in John's own baptism. As seen in Matthew 28:18-19, it follows Jesus' order or
directive and it is a public word of faith to the rest of the world. Having been baptized into a
Christian Church indicates a devotion to the community 's beliefs, traditions and culture. It
introduces them to the whole Christian existence, introduces them to the Holy Spirit-led
existence, and allows them access to all other sacraments or practices provided by the
denomination in question. Furthermore, it frees them from sin and allows them to be
resurrected as God's children. They have become Christ's representatives and are integrated
into the church and therefore participate in its mission. While certain religions decide that
baptism may only be preceded by redemption, baptism may certainly not render a person a
christian. Protestant churches specifically claim that it is an outward sign of an internal or
moral commitment. Although most churches practice infant baptism, it is not difficult to
underestimate the role of individuals agreeing for their own baptism.
