CIVILIAN AWARDS

Bharat Ratna : The Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian


award of the Republic of India. The award is conferred in
recognition of exceptional service/performance of the
highest order", without distinction of race, occupation,
position, or sex. It is the premier civilian award, to serve
the nation.
 The Bharat Ratna has been conferred after a gap
of four years.
 Pranab Mukherjee received the award from the
President Ram Nath Kovind , at a function in
Rashtrapati Bhawan.
 Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and
founder of Banaras Hindu University Madan
Mohan Malviya were given the award by the
Narendra Modi government in 2015.
 The first recipients of the Bharat Ratna was
politician C. Rajagopalachari, philosopher
Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, and scientist C. V.
Raman, who were honoured in 1954.
 Indira Gandhi became the first woman to
receive the Bharat Ratna award

Padma Vibhushan : The Padma Vibhushan is the


second-highest civilian award of the Republic of India. It
awarded people from various fields including Govt.
service to distinguish extraordinary service for the
country.

Padma Bhushan : The Padma Bhushan is the third-


highest civilian award in the Republic of India, preceded
by the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan. The
award is given for "distinguished service of a high order
without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex.
This year, it was awarded to 16 people from different
fields.
Padma Shri: It is awarded to citizens of India for their
distinguished contribution in several fields including
Education, Literature, Arts, Science, Industry, Social
Service, Medicine, Sports & Public Affairs.

Gallantry (Bravery) Awards


WHICH FOR WHAT

Param Vir Chakra : Param Vir Chakra (PVC) is the


highest gallantry award for officers and other enlisted
personnel of all military branches of India for the highest
degree of valour in the presence of the enemy on land, sea
or air.
Maha Vir Chakra : The Maha Vir Chakra (MVC) is the
second highest military decoration in India, after the
Param Vir Chakra, and is awarded for acts of conspicuous
gallantry in the presence of the enemy, whether on land,
at sea or in the air.

Vir Chakra : It is the third in the order of awards for acts


of gallantry in the face of the enemy on land, sea or air.

Ashok Chakra : Ashoka Chakra is India's highest


peacetime military decoration awarded for valour,
courageous action or self-sacrifice away from the
battlefield. It is the peace time equivalent of the Param
Vir Chakra, and is awarded for the "most conspicuous
bravery or some daring or pre-eminent valour or self-
sacrifice" other than in the face of the enemy.
