History of Table Tennis

International History of Table Tennis

Federation
The game Table Tennis, also called “Ping-Pong” was invented in England in the early days of
the 20th Century. The name was “Table Tennis” was adopted in 1921-22 when the old Ping-Pong
Association that was formed in 1902 revived. Apparently, the original association had broken up
about 1905. However, the game was continued to be played in parts of England outside London.
The Federation Internationale de Tennis de Table ( International Table Tennis Federation) which
was led by representatives of Hungary, England and Germany was founded in 1962 by the
founding members being England, Sweden, India, Hungary,Denmark,Germany, Austria, Wales
and Czechoslovakia. More than 165 national associations were members in the mid-1990s. In
1926, the first world championship was held in London, and from then until 1939 the game was
dominated by players from Central Europe, the men’s team event being won nine times by
Hungary and twice by Czechoslovakia. Mid-1950s, Asia emerged as a breeding ground of
championships, and from then the men’s team event has been won by either Japan or China, as
has the women’s event, though to a lesser extent; North Korea also became an International
Force.
The first World Cup was held in 1980 and Guo Yuehua of China won the first prize of $12,500.
Table Tennis (Ping-Pong) became an Olympic sport in 1988, with singles and doubles
competition for both men and women.

Regional History of Table Tennis

Logo showing the governing Regional body: Caribbean Regional Table Tennis
Federation.

COTECC was created in 1992 as one of the points discussed in the Annual General Meeting
ofthe ITF held in La Romana, Dominican Republic, in which it was agreed to create a governing
body for tennis that would unite the countries of Central America, the Spanish Caribbean and the
English Caribbean.

It was that same year, in Mexico, the COTECC statutes were signed and also the Mexican Jesus
Topete was selected as the first president of the Confederation for a period of two years.

However, as the former president of the organism Gonzalo Mejía says, there were other
organizations that preceded COTECC as tennis governing body in the area, although they never
received recognition from the ITF. In 1968, as a result of the beginning of the Open Era, tennis
was left out of Olympism, which automatically caused that it was not an official sport in the Pan
American or in the Central American and Caribbean Games.

7
Test Code: 01252090 Candidate Number: 0900020121

This situation caused that several countries founded the Pan-American Tennis Confederation in
1971, which had the recognition of the national Olympic committees of all America, which
produced the return of tennis to the Central Americans and the Caribbean Santo Domingo 74 and
the Pan American Games of Mexico 75.

Mejía adds that for the year 1982, during Central American and Caribbean Games in Havana, in
Cuba, it was formed the basis for creating the COTECC that we currently have: the Central
American and Caribbean Confederation of Tennis, with a large part of the countries that make it
up today.
