INTRODUCTION
Human beings were made to move around from one location to the next, hence the reason why
the researchers found it fitting to investigate how the rise in petrol prices affect taxi operators in
the community of Old Harbour. A study was carried out by a group of researchers on how the
increase of gas price affect taxi operators in the community of Old Harbour.

How the increase of petrol price affect taxi operators in a community
The objective of this research is to investigate how the increase of petrol price affects taxi
operators in the community of Old Harbour Town

OBJECTIVES
The researcher’s objectives are to discuss the effects of the increased price of petrol impact taxi
operators in the community of Old Harbour Town.

BACKGROUND
Taxi services has been in existence from 1897 and it has played a huge role helping commuters
reach their destination. It has especially helped the citizens of Old Harbour Town to help travel
to the main roads of Spanish Town. The price of the fair is one hundred dollars ($100) JMD.
The reason why this topic is important to study is that it allows researchers to view the effects of
rising gas prices on persons.

METHODOLOGY
In order to find out how the increase in petrol prices affect taxi operators in Old Harbour Town,
the researchers have decided to use a quantitative method to conduct their research. The methods
that were chosen to get results are questionnaires and interviews. The questionaries consist of 15
questions that were issued to the taxi operators of Old Harbour town on January 20th, 2021 while
the interview consist of 5 questions and were answered by the commuters of Old Harbour Town
on the 1st of February 2021. Both open and closed ended questions were used. The reason for this
chosen method of data collection is to allow the researcher to collect large amount of information
and to get the view and explanation of the individual, as for the type of questions used, this was
done to ascertain accuracy. The researcher experienced some challenges in that some taxi
operators as well as commuters refuse to answer some questions that were presented to them as
they were either busy, uncomfortable or just didn’t want to do it. The data collected will be
presented using tables and graphs and analyzed using percentage and figures.

ANALYSIS OF DATA
The questionnaire results revealed that unanimously 50% of the 20 taxi operators purchase petrol
twice every three days while 20% purchase petrol 3 times a week and the remaining 30% stated
they purchase petrol 6 times in 10 days.
When asked in interviews how long it took to reach Old Habour Town from Spanish Town, 40%
of the taxi operators took 30 mins-1hour, 35% took 30 mins or less while the remaining 25%
took over an hour.
Since the increased price of petrol affected the operation, it was claimed that 45% of the
operators buy $2000 worth of gas, 40% buy $1000 worth of gas and 15% buy $500 worth of gas.

CONCLUSION
It was concluded that the increased price of petrol affected majority of the taxi operations.

RECOMMENDATIONS
The project’s analysis confirmed that one major factor that affects the taxi operators is the
increased prices of petrol. Since the price of petrol increase, one recommendation to the taxi
operation is that they can persuade the government to increase taxi fair in order for the taxi
operators to profit from their job which allow them to be able to purchase an average amount of
petrol.
