Introduction
According to the Human and Social Biology for CSEC (2010).Obesity is a disease that is cause
by excess amount of body fat. Obesity in teenagers is a major public health crisis nationally and
internationally. The prevalence of teen obesity has increased over few years. It is cause by
imbalance diet, stress, family problems and emotional problems these Are some of the causes of
teenage obesity. Hence, effective intervention strategies are being used to prevent and control
teen obesity. A variety of intervention and governmental actions addressing obesity and the
challenges ahead to prevent this in our teens and also to lower the chance of teenagers having
heart attacks and strokes, I believe that the government should start a program that helps to
motivate teenagers living with obesity that are struggling with low self-esteem, this program will
make them feel more comfortable with their bodies and to be convinced to start a diet plan to
help them loose weight.

Research Objective: How many students are overweight, Acceptable, obese and under weight?

What is obesity?

What is a balance diet?

How to prevent obesity in teenagers?

Problem statement
The investigator would like to know how much grade 11 students are struggling with obesity.

Five
Six

Methodology
The investigator will be investigating how much grade 11 students are struggling with obesity.
To find this information the investigator will have to collect 25 students BMI (Body Mass index)
and determine which of the students that are under weight, acceptable, over weight, obese and
severely obese and questionnaires will be used gather to grade 11 students opinion on teen
obesity. During this investigation I have learn that obesity also increased risk of impaired
glucose tolerance and increased the chance of type 2 diabetes.

Equation for BMI = Body mass (kg) divided by Height (m2)

eg. Student A= 1.73x1.73 divided by 69 = 23.0

This is a chart of each students BMI.

Analysis and interpretation of data

As shown in the information above most of the grade 11 students are Acceptable and the second
lowest are Underweight. Research shows that 28% are underweight, 44% are acceptable, 20%
are over weight, 8% are obese. This information is good because it shows that majority of
students are healthy. I did a tally that represents the students BMI. it is shown that 7 students are
underweight, 11 students are acceptable, 5 students are over weight, 1 student is obese (class 1)
and 1 student is obese ( class 2).

Conclusion
The majority of students are Acceptable. The possible reason why students are over weight can
be the lack of exercising and due to excess eating also know as eating disorder.

Recommendation
The school administrator should look into having a exercise break during classes. Another
recommendation is to restrict the sales of sugary drinks and fatty snacks. less sugary drinks
should be sold and more natural options should be made acceptable.

Reflection
I learn from this investigation that most student are not on a balance diet, I also learn that the
amount of calories that students eat on a day to day basic can lead to another health related
disease like heart failure. This can be prevented by having more physical activities at school and
more water should be sold, because water can prevent excess sodium in students diet that won't
lead to heart failure. During this investigation I also learn how to calculate persons BMI, and also
improving my converting skills in math because we had the convert from kg to 1b.
