Title

An investigation to determine whether students of 11A perform better academically on online

class versus physical learning since the corona virus pandemic?

1
Introduction

According to the Ministry of Health and Wellness of Jamaica, Corona virus is defined as a large

family of viruses that are known to cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe

diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory

Syndrome (SARS). This virus has led to many changes within our society and the world in

general. One of such changes is the replacing of physical learning, with online learning. This

online learning is done via the Google classroom platform.

The views of students varied as it relates to physical and online learning. As a result of this, these

researchers is aimed at finding out whether students of 11A perform better academically in

English language online versus physical learning since the corona virus pandemic.

2
Method of data collection

To ascertain information these researchers will have a question-and-answer session with five (5)

students from 11A. These generated questions will be geared towards their outlook on online

learning versus physical learning and some of the four (4) test scores they received using each

platform.

ANALASIS OF DATA

The tables above show the average of 11A students how well they performed online than

physical class. Out of a class of forty-eight (48) students only ten (10) persons were able to tell

us their scores online versus face-to-face classes. Most students didn’t like the online classes but

yet some of them performed better and have improve their grades but some still need a little

more help. After doing the calculations the total average for the student’s doing online class was

74% and their overall grade for physical class was 76%. So, as you can see the averages drop

down 2% since the pandemic started. The highest performance was by chad who got an overall

average of 84% on both online and physical class which is good that he has a great average and

need to keep it up or do better.

12
DISCUSSION OF FINDINGS

Finding out how many 11a students prefer online English, Mathematics and other subjects, than

face to face was done by doing a survey in the form of tables and bar graphs. One may think

students may prefer online classes, because they have the advantage of technology than face to

face but it was not so. The researchers found out that of the forty five (45) student’s only ten (10)

students told us their scores in English, Mathematics and other subjects during online versus face

to face classes. The researchers also found that most of the students didn't like virtual learning

despite the fact that a small percent performed better, after carrying out our survey the total

average for the student’s engaging in online classes was 74% and their overall grade for physical

classes was 76%. So, as you can see the averages drop down 2% since the pandemic started. The

satisfaction of face to face classes was much higher than virtual learning.

13
Conclusion
The purpose of this project was to determine whether students of 11A perform better

academically and online class versus physical learning since the corona virus pandemic. The

researcher had question and answer session with 10 students from that form; we then calculated

the average of each student and presented them on a bar graph. After the final draft of the data

was completed, we were convinced that most of the students perform better academically in the

physical classroom.
