The Percieved Effects of Motor Cab Fare Rate to Motor Cab Drivers and Passengers in

Tangub City

INTRODUCTION

In cities of developed nations, a good transportation mix generally exists, that is, the

presence of non-motorized and private motor vehicles and a good range public transportation

system notably buses in different sizes as well as choices in trains and monorails. On the other

hand, especially with that of public transportation, the opposite seems to be happening in most

cities of developing countries, particularly in Southeast Asia. The lack of common or traditional

forms of a public transport network and infrastructure such as mass public transportation is

usually substituted with other innovative modes of public transportation.

The case of the Philippines in Southeast Asia is not an exception. Aside from the usual

buses and taxis, it is a country where all modes of imaginable means of motorized public

transport seem to ply the roads as exemplified by the presence of jeepneys, multicabs, megataxis,

tricycles and “habal-habal”. The latter two, is another innovation out of the motorcycle in the late

fifties and nineties, respectively. Interestingly, this mode has been, since then, part of the

Philippine's urban landscape.

In the face of transport advancement coupled with increasing technological as well

environmental concerns and a drive towards sustainable transportation, the issue is whether the

presence of innovative modes of local public transportation like the tricycles are to be

encouraged. This is especially highlighted in the case of the Philippines that has recently enacted
a landmark environmental legislation, the Clean Air Act of 1999 and has highlighted that one of

the causes of road- based pollution are the tricycles (Guillen et al. 2014)

.B. Statement of the Problem

In this paper we will going to explore the percieved effects of motor cab fare rate to

motor cab drivers and passengers in Tangub City.

C. Scope and Limitation of the study

2. Explore the different perception of motor cab drivers and passengers towards motor cab fare rate

in Ozamiz City.

Research Design

For this study we used the Phenominological study as our research design. A

phenomenological research study is a study that attempts to understand people's perceptions,

perspectives and understandings of a particular situation (or phenomenon).

passengers gave a total number of 20 participant’s residence here in Tangub City.

Research Instruments

During our survey the research instrument we used is the interview question which is the

common types of a research instrument. An interview questions is a conversation

where questions are asked and answers are given. In common parlance, the word "interview"

refers to a one-on-one conversation with one person acting in the role of the interviewer and the

other in the role of the interviewee

Data Collection

Steps:

The researcher will create an interview questions regarding the topic. After making the

interview questions the researcher will start to interview whose aim to identify the participant’s

opinions regarding a particular subject.Collect the response of the participants. Assure that the

participant’s responses will be confidential. After collecting the information that the researchers

gathered, researcher then analyze and interpret the data.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This study uses a descriptive qualitative research with twenty participants, ten are motor

cab drivers and ten are passengers. After the researchers acquire the primary data, we divided

their responses or answers into three themes which is from the drivers and the passengers, for us

to determine the perceived effects of motor cab drivers and passengers towards motor cab fare

rate.

Theme no. 1:Proportional to Gasoline price increase

Out of ten respondents who are drivers agreed to the new implemented ordinance about

fare, often say that the increase in fares helps them especially that the price of gasoline has

increased so they can say that increasing of fare here in Tangub City is just enough. The rates

"are generally tied to local wage levels and cost of living, but other factors are also in play, such

as cost of gasoline, supply and demand of taxicabs and availability of alternative modes of

transportation(Walter, C. K., & Suzuki, Y. 2012).

“Agree ko ana kay mahal man pudang gasoline, unya mahal man pudang pamaliton sakto rana

ongordinansamakatabangsa among mga driver.”

sa gasoline, sakto rapud nga gipatas-an.”

Theme no. 2: Higher Family Income

Four of the respondent drivers are saying and agreeing to the new ordinance regarding

the increase in fare here in Ozamiz City, they are happy because the fare has increased it has

contributes to their daily lives. It increases their income as a driver."If a fare adjustment is not

made, this would put in question their income on a monthly basis and thus further potentially

reduce the number of TNVS vehicles plying the streets because they would be forced to find

other jobs that are better paying,"(Fellon, B. 2004, May 6).

pag malayo P8 talaga.”

“Para saakuamakatabangnisyaisip us aka driver, syempre sauna P7 daunkaronnitaasmaka

income najud mi.”

Theme no. 1: Unfair to the Passengers

Allof the passengers do not agree about the new ordinance especially to the students.

The minimum fare P10 is too high for them. Unlike before you can get a change in your P10

because the minimum fare is P7 but now P10 is just enough.

“My stand about the new implemented ordinance sapamiletesaOzamiz City it is unfair for the

students kaywalaytrabahoangtagaanrabiya tag kwartasaatongmga parents though naa man tay

parents musustentoperomuragang P10 ngapamasahedakorajudsiyapero’g sauna P7

ramakayarakaynaa pay masuklinga P3.”

“Para saakoasobrarapudkaayoangpagtaassapresyokayang P7 nadungaganug P3 where is kung

duolraang among adtoan unfair kaayokaymakabayadkag P8.”

“Akongapasahero di gyuduntakopaborsagipatukodngaordinansakaydakorakaayougtaas, okay

raunta to ug peso raangtaasunyakaronkay P8 diretso.”

lagyo an gadtoan.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Based on the interview result that we gathered, most of the motor cab drivers have agreed

to the new implemented ordinance which is the increase of motor cab fare it’s because the

price of the gasoline also increased and their daily income can also increase. On the other side,

most of the passengers are not in favor with it. According to them the increase of fare is not fair.

This viewpoint that the researcher gathered gives the idea that there are many different effects of

the new implemented ordinance about fare rate here in Ozamis City to drivers and passengers.

Based on the data we gathered, we the researcher conclude that the increase of fare gives many

positive effects to all drivers some of this effect are the increase of income and it add to their

daily living in terms of financial. While in the passenger they have opposite effect one of this
effects is the problem in budgeting especially for the students, but it has also a positive effects

which is they can easily find a motor cab even if he's just one. The future study may include on

how attitudes affects the income rate of the driver.
