Pre-Activity:

Before we embark on G.I, think and reflect on how:

What are some examples of transport modes that we use in Singapore?

Would everyone use these transport modes with the same frequency?
Why/why not?

Bus,MRT,LRT,car, taxi and cycling are the transport modes that we use in

Singapore. Majority of the people are using MRT and bus. In Singapore,
MRT and bus systems have an extensive number of routes that allows
commuters to alight closer to work and closer to home. Car and taxi are the
next common transport which people use frequently.

What do you think are some reasons why traffic congestion occurs in
Singapore? What are some methods Singapore has employed to manage
traffic congestion in Singapore?

Traffic congestion occurs in Singapore as many people are rushing to school

or work in the mornings or are on their way home from work in the
evenings.During peak hours, roads that are congested are usually those
leading to and from the CBD such as expressways. To reduce traffic
congestion,Singapore introduced Electonic Road Pricing in 1998.By
combining congestion pricing with investments in public transit, bicycling and
walking networks, and transit-oriented development, Singapore increased
bus and train ridership. PTC introduced the Morning Pre-Peak Fares which
allow commuters to enjoy up to 50-cent savings when they tap-in before
7.45am at any rail station island-wide on weekdays.

Do you think the methods Singapore has implemented are effective? Why/why
not?
I think the methods Singapore has implemented are effective. They reduced
congestion within the first few months, reduced traffic and decreased greenhouse
gas emissions in the city centre. However, there are still room for improvement.
Roads can be better for cyclists. This can attract more cyclists in the future.

Establishing context of our G.I

Traffic systems are essential in cities to facilitate the everyday movement of people,
goods and services. When transport congestion occurs, the efficiency of this
movement is hindered.

The purpose of the investigation is to investigate:

(1) the various types of transport modes used in the area

(2) how the mobility needs of the communities can be better improved.

Using our school as a site of reference, think: how do you usually commute to school
on a daily basis? Would you choose an alternative transport route? Why/why not?

1) Individual task – Secondary Research (literature review)

Your task is to gather data about a case study on the transport system of another
city/country.

Find a case study of another city (excluding Melbourne) or country which uses an
alternative form of transport to commute from one location to another. You will
include the following in your secondary data: (100-200 words):

● Describe the main type of transport mode used in this city/country.

● Based on the characteristics of transport systems, elaborate on the quality of

this mode of transport used.
● Describe the positive and negative impacts this mode of transport would
have on the environment (physical and/or human) and people
● Describe why you think this transport mode is successful or not successful
as a mode of quality transport

In Thailand, paratransit is a urban public transport mode.It has various

types such as motorcycle-taxi, Tuk-tuk and Songtaew . The majority use
Songtaew as a main type of transport mode.

Songtaew provides passenger movement in both within towns, cities and for

longer routes between cities. There are 2 types of Songtaew where one
accommodates more than 30 passengers and the other one 20 passengers. It
uses a flat-fare system. Adult fare is 9 THB while student fare is 5 THB. The
waiting time per unit of Songtaew is 4.17 minutes. The accessibility is usually
convenient for people who travel in the CBD because of the congestion, the lack of
parking space in CBD areas. All student users are satisfied with the service
because of cheap fare and convenience.

The operating cost using LPG or CNG is much lower than diesel. LPG
releases CO2 but it is cleaner when compared to gasoline. CNG releases lesser
greenhouse gas. Songtaew drivers are encouraged to use this as it would
contribute to the sustainable transportation and environmental friendly.

This transport mode is successful as it continuously grows and still plays a

significant role in the city more than other public transportation vehicles because of
its advantages on accessibility and low-cost service.
