Does the modernization program really help the countrymen, or will it only cause another

burden? For decades, old traditional vehicles called "jeepneys" have been used by the majority of
the country's population. It is the most accessible and cheapest medium of public transportation
in the Philippines. However, the Jeepney Modernization Program (JMP) that was introduced by
the LTFRB in 2015 is now being pushed through after a long delay, which is said to improve the
quality of public transportation. However, these initiatives also present a number of difficulties
for commuters, drivers, and jeepney owners. These concerns include the price of purchasing new
vehicles, an increase in fares, a possible lack of jeepneys, and the fact that this will force jeepney
drivers out of business.

The main reason for jeepney modernization is to replace old, traditional vehicles with safer, more
efficient, and environmentally friendly vehicles. But this jeepney is expected to cost up to $2.6
million, which is more than the operators and drivers of jeepneys can afford. Given that jeepney
drivers often make only a few hundred pesos per day and the growing price of gasoline, among
other variables, it is likely to be assumed that their income is lower. Because of this, jeepney
operators and drivers will only suffer from a huge debt.

The lack of jeepneys is also a factor that we must consider because most of the operators will not
be able to afford the modernized jeep. Considering that modernized jeepneys can only
accompany a few passengers, this will cause more hassle for commuters as they will have
difficulties catching a ride. Not only that, it will also cause a rise in the fare, which now costs 14
pesos per ride. Lack of jeepneys can also contribute to jeepney congestion and air pollution, and
will turn operators into being out of business due to this program.

To add,

For all factors presented above, we can draw the conclusion that modernizing jeepneys is not the
only solution to provide safer, more efficient, and eco friendly vehicles. Despite its good
intentions, there are a number of factors to consider, especially for the jeepney drivers and
operators.
