June 30, 2023 – LTFRB's memorandum circular giving traditional jeeps until June 30,

2023
Why do we need a jeepney modernization program?
• Firstly, the Philippines has a lot of traffic overlapping regarding routes,
concessions, and services. This caused classic congestion in our country.
• Secondly, many owners are crammed with customers over the permitted number
(exceeding 26 people).
• In addition, the design of the jeepney is quite inconvenient and small. The rows of
seats are arranged to face each other, making it difficult to stand upright.
Therefore, moving and carrying customers is not safe.
• Finally, tracking how many vehicles are running the same route or counterfeit
franchises is challenging because of the franchise.

Jeepney modernization debate: Advantages

• Reduce pollution,
• Improve punctuality—since this program, people will be informed in advance of the
schedule of routes, which helps to travel faster and avoid congestion,
• Enhance comfort

Jeepney modernization debate: Disadvantages

• First of all, upgrading a jeepney can significantly raise the price of the vehicle,
making it difficult for many drivers and even operators to purchase one. Since
many operators might have to stop operating at this time, it's possible that private
corporations would take over the jeepney industry. As a result, commuters in the
Philippines will pay more.
• Although Poe, the chair of the Senate's public services committee, introduced
Senate Bill No. 867, which provide fair loans and financial aid to jeepney drivers.
Pinangandang word lang ‘yong for utang. They are still the one paying for that
jeepney.
• Jeepney modernization debate among Covid-19. We had a lockdown for several
months starting in 2020. Most citizens don’t have any source of income since even
private company are on lockdown. They submitted the modernization act on 2017.
You cannot expect the drivers to saved a million more pesos on that time span.

Conclusion: The Covid-19 pandemic has delayed the program's execution and sparked
a discussion over the jeepney phase-out among Filipinos since dapat . On the plus side,
the government will have more time to weigh the advantages of all parties involved and
develop the best solution.
