JEEPNEY PHASEOUT

What is Jeepney? Jeepney is the Philippines’ most popular mean

of public transport, extremely cheap and pretty comfortable, used by most of
the locals. It is also known as Jeeps and in Filipino you would call it Dyipne or
Dyip.

In Jeepney Modernization Program, the government aims to phase out

the outdated jeepneys and replace them with new and safer jeepneys on the
road. In this program , it will increase passenger, safety and reduce pollution,
those units that are more that 15 years old, will not be allowed.

Many jeepney drivers and operators are against to this program. First,
the unit is so expensive that in every unit cost almost Php 2.6 million pesos.
Second, they cannot acquire unit immediately, they needed to have ten unit to
be a member of cooperative.

Likewise, only minimum will be given to the drivers and operators, the
rest of the income will automatically given to the cooperative, however, the
maintenance will be shouldered by the operators.

In sum, this will not even help to those small jeepney drivers and operators,
where their daily food, and allowance for their kids going to school robbed
from them.
