Jeepney drivers in the Philippines are essential affordable transportation providers but face
numerous challenges, including fuel price fluctuations and competition from ride-hailing
services. Many operate on a daily income basis, making it difficult to sustain their livelihoods
during low commuter periods. To address these challenges, the government has instituted
interventions such as financial aid packages, fuel subsidies, and loan assistance programs. Some
local governments have also initiated route rationalization and modernization programs to
upgrade jeepneys. However, the effectiveness of these interventions varies, with financial aid
offering temporary relief but not addressing underlying structural issues like employment
insecurity. Modernization efforts have encountered resistance from drivers due to the inability to
afford new vehicles due to their costly price. The Philippines is known for the infamous
Jeepneys, so changing them would somehow mean removing the uniqueness and identity of the
Philippines to foreign countries. Despite these challenges, jeepney drivers remain a crucial part
of the public transportation system, especially for marginalized communities with limited
transportation options. Sustainable solutions are needed to ensure the long-term economic
stability of jeepney drivers and address systemic issues within the industry.
